Daycare to be ready by June 1
By JESSICA PATE
Dreams of a fully
functioning, state-of-the-art
daycare center on the Wayne
Community Campus are
swiftly becoming a reality.
Completion of this facility
was predicted for April, but
the daycare will not be
occupied until May, said Dr.
Kay Albertson, Associate
Vice President of Academic
Affairs.
All ftimiture and needed
supplies have been ordered.
Furniture is at this time being
moved in, according to Ken
Ritt, Vice President of
Educational Support Services.
The daycare is predicted to
be fully functioning by June
1.
The building will be
named the Oak Building to
coincide with the horticultural
names of the existing
facilities on campus.
Four classrooms will
house infants 6 weeks-1 year
old. The second will
accommodate toddlers 1 -2
years; the third, 3 year olds;
and the fourth, 4- 5 year olds.
The total capacity is 55
students.
An exciting feature of the
daycare is an outside learning
environment, Albertson said.
It brings the learning tools or
lessons outside for the
children to continue their
education while experiencing
nature.
Designated areas for art,
dramatic play, reading,
blocks, sand and art station,
and a gross motor station
allow for a variety of
stimulating activities to
enrich the minds of the
students.
A paved walking/ tricycle
track provides a chance for
physical activity. This track
consists of 2 loops around the
playground area.
The truck from Kaplan furniture stands ready to be unloaded in front of the daycare.
The building will house a
substantial increase from the
current enrollment of 22
children. According to Dr.
Albertson, a long waiting list
exists now.
A technological addition
to this daycare is a closed-
circuit television that, through
an internet connection, will
allow parents to observe their
children throughout the day.
WCC is striving to create a
top-notch facility for youth.
“There are high hopes for a 5
star license,” Dr. Alberston
said. “Every child will be
prepared for school.”
The campus is currently
accepting applications for
daycare positions. If anyone
is interested, contact Dr.
Albertson, at ext. 316. All
workers are required to have
a minimum of an AAS
degree.
