Dr. Ed Wilson, Jr., WCC President, assists student Sherrel Gaydos, network administration major, with ribbons to honor students' deployed family members and friends. By MARY BETH KORNEGAY and MICHAEL GURLEY Voice: How has the recent deployment of the military affected the student enrollment? PHOTO: VOICE STAFF Wilson: There have been 60 students to withdraw from the base. Also, Mr. Everhart, an instructor, was deployed with the Coast Guard. Voice: Have you seen or noticed any changes in student morale because of the war? Wilson: We have not seen any changes in the student morale, but students are concerned. Voice: Because of complaints from students every semester, will there ever be any steps taken to improve parking conditions? Wilson: We will be monitoring the parking lots. There will be about 50 new spots with the additions of the new buildings. Voice: What steps are taken to provide information about weather delays and school closings? Wilson: Delays and closing are put on 7 TV stations, 6 radio stations and on the schools’ answering machine. It will also be available on the schools’ website as well. Voice: Could WCC ever become a “tuition-free” college, where the students work at the college to compensate for the money? Wilson: It is a good idea, but there are not enough jobs available for the amount of students we have. Voice: Do you feel that there is a drug problem at WCC? Wilson: There are students who do drugs, and the school is concerned. If someone is caught, he or she will be dismissed from the college. Voice: Are there any new and exciting projects in upcoming semesters? Wilson: There are many new building projects. The dental expansion will be complete in August. A continuing education building will be built next fall. We are planning for a new building to house BLET, expanding the physical education classes, and more computer labs next fall as well. There are also plans to renovate the student center to provide more space and more seating. Voice: Are there going to be any new classes added to WCC? Wilson: We are adding Operation Management (for Quality Control in business and industry), and Surgical Technology. We also hope to bring in instructors from ECU to teach the last 2 years needed for a teaching degree. Voice: What do you enjoy doing in your free time? Wilson: I like to play golf, watch sports, do yard work, and listen to country and beach music. Voice: What is most rewarding to you about being the President of WCC? Wilson: Seeing students graduate, transfer to other universities, and able to turn their life around. The most special event of the year is graduation. Expansion on schedule BY BARRI-ANN WIGGINS Students that have come by the Pine building since December, have noticed that the building is undergoing some changes necessary for the dental program to maintain its accreditation and to anticipate growth. The dental expansion benefits the whole dental department by adding 2,552 square feet to the building. The purpose is to be able to add more chairs. They had 15 and now they will have-24. The chairs will be separated by 4 foot partitions, which meet the dental standards and also to prevent splattering of fluids, from one patient to another. The expansion includes the chairs separated by partitions and 2 new X-ray rooms. continued page 16 Construction continues on schedule for the expansion of the dental lab^ PHOTO: BARRI-ANW WIGGINS
