Contributors included businesses such as the Bryan Foundation, Wayne Memorial Hospital, and the Wayne County Dental Society. Individuals memorializing family members also gave endowments toward the scholarship fund. A major fund raising event is the aimual Benefit Golf Tournament. The 12^*^ annual tournament will be held at Lane Tree Country Club on June 15^^ and Last year’s tournament raised $48,000 to fund scholarships for WCC students. In addition to raising money for scholarships, the non profit Foundation, under the directorship of Jack Kannan, has hosted many events to enrich and educate both WCC students and Wayne County residents. On February 6, 2004, an audience enjoyed a rare, live taping of Dr. Bill Friday’s North Carolina People Friday interviewed Goldsboro’s native son, Carl Kasell who got his start in the radio business at age 16 at a Goldsboro station WGBR. Since 1975, Kasell has been an award-winning radio journalist for National Pubhc Radio, hosting such programs as Weekend All Things Considered and Morning Edition and was an official judge and score-keeper for the NPR quiz show Wait, Wait.Dm V Tdl M^L “An Evening with Carl Kasell” was hosted at the Walnut Creek Country Club. Attendees enjoyed a variety of food served buffet style. Another major event was Nnenna Freelon, jazz vocalist, performing in Jazz Revisited held in Moffatt Auditorium on April Freelon has connections with WCC as she was a visiting artist in 1991-92. Nine albums, an appearance in the movie What Women Want and 5 Grammy award nominations later, Freelon returned to WCC. The Foundation of WCC has also sponsored a series of. lectures taught by Bill Brettmann. The first entitled “Lost Christianities” was held at the Wayne County Public Library on February 3-24,2004, and the second, a lecture called “Walker Percy’s Lancelot” was held in the same location on March 1-22. Dr. Charles Kimball, Chair of Wake Forest University’s Department of Religious Studies, gave a lecture entitled “When Religion Turns Evil: Five Warning Signs” on March 30^^.
