16 WCC CAMPUS VOICE - APRIL 30. 2004 Forestry students plant seedlings to revive flooded land By BECKY JOHNSON On Friday, February 13, 2004, forestry students and instructors at Wayne Community College drove to Mar Mac to plant 31 acres of trees on land acquired after the floods of 1999. Jim Slye, forestry instructor since 1998, contacted the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to ask if the land could be used as labs for students in the Forest Management Technology Program. FEMA agreed to sign a contract giving use of the land to the college for 99 years. The project to replant the former flood lands started with $120 from college funds to buy the tree seedlings that would result in 1 acre of mixed hard wood, 5 acres of long leaf and the rest in loblolly pines. The trees were only $40 for every 1000, so the rest of the money was spent on a contractor to complete the project. In addition to planting 26 of the 31 acres students will maintain the land keeping it in good condition. Forestry students are required to take 3 summer courses, some of which will send them to Mar Mac again to apply herbicides. Slye said, “This project is rewarding because it gives the students experience and it revives dead land.” He said what was once flood land now has a better chance of surviving the next hurricane because the water will have some place else to go- Slye said when the planted area becomes too crowded with in the next 5 years, students will imdertake a thinning project that could yield a profit for the college.
