CAMPUSVOICE Page 9 Friday, April 7,2006 On the road to an education Rain or shine, Rebecca Sewell determined to get to campus By ASHTON STRIBBLE Staff Writer What makes a student so dedicated to school that she rides her scooter all the way from Dudley? “I feel lilce it (pursuing an education) is a challenge at my age, I enjoy it, and it keeps my brain focused,” said Rebecca Sewell, who is studying Medical Technology. “It also gives me an opportunity for a career in life.” The type of scooter she has is a Winner. It takes her 20 to 30 minutes to get to school. She rides about 15 miles down the back roads to stay away from heavy traffic. Rebecca has been doing this , ever since the beginning of school this year. This has not always been her way of transportation. Before the scooter she used her friend’s vehicle but his work hours became the same time as when she had to be at class. Rebecca chose to ride the scooter to make sure she was at school everyday. When arriving at school, she would park behind the Magnolia Building with the motorcycles. “I would just pretend I was on a motorcycle instead of a scooter,” Rebecca said. She never had an accident while riding the scooter but her biggest challenge was when it was raining. She would have to wear a raincoat and wrap her books in plastic so that they would not get soaked. “One day it was raining and my friend clocked out »4. ^ Rebecca Sewell is pictured with her scooter at her home in Dudley. of work, came and got me off the scooter and took me to school,” she said. “I was determined to ride my scooter no matter what. “I prayed for something to happen because it was getting tough and a friend in my class offered to start bringing me to school. I cried all the way home, I was so thankful.” Rebecca decided to come back to school because she wanted something to do to occupy her time and she wants a better career. Rebecca, who is 47 years old, has a couple of more years before she graduates. She wants to work in a medical office because she used to work in that kind of field and likes to assist people who help others.
