THE COUGAR CRY, OCT. 11, 1967, PAGE 2 Wanted: Student Center Editorial Comment For the past year we students at Wilkes Community College have not had a place for social meetings. When we had two or three hours between classes, we would go to the college library where we would PRETEND to study. Because we had no particular place to socialize, a conversation would always arise. If a few of us wanted to take our cars, we iKpuld meet at Jack’s Drive-in and Try to carry on a conversation from one car to the next, while others tried to study. Canyou imagine study ing Newtons’ theory of gravity while french fries were being dumped into your lap? To say the least, the whole thing became frustrating at times, but we kept hoping that maybe by this year we would have a student center. Now we are sophomores and there is a new freshmen class and we are still hoping for a student center. The administration and fa culty are aware that we need a student center, but they have not been successful in solving this pro blem. We feel that it is now time for the students to take action and find a vacant room or rooms for a student center. Many students are ready to clean up and decorate a place so we can say, “this is ours, we’re proud of it.” This feeling in itself shows that the students want to work for the betterment of themselves and their school. The reward for locating such a student center will be the knowledge that one has expressed school pride and also brought many hours of plea sure to others. Message From The President The college year has been launched, and all curriculum classes are now in session. For students that have entered programs for the first time, the cloud of confusion inherent during orientation week with its testing programs, counseling sessions, re gistration procedures, standing in lines and myriad other activity should now be clearing. It is hoped that the majority of your questions have been answered and that you are now settled in your chosen program. As you look around, you find that you have plenty of company. Therefore, you should become acquainted with fellow classmates as soon as possible; you will have a lot to share. The number moving from one class to another is firm evidence of a record enrollment. As of this time our enrollment stands at 543 FTE Letters To The Editor students. (FTE is an equation used by the state to determine full time enrollment and is equal to a stu dent’s taking sixteen contact hours for a period of eleven weeks.) This enrollment sets an alltime record for Wilkes Community College; in fact, the increase is 196% over the fall term of last year. This record enrollment has both good and bad implications for you: Good in that it makes possible a wide offering of courses, greatly in creases opportunity for school acti vities such as sports, student gov ernment, social activities and many others; bad in that the facilities that we are temporarily using may not be what we would desire for you. In eithe r regard you will have a wealth of opportunities to take full part in all those experiences and activities that make college life one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. Dear Miss Daye: The newspaper staff thanks you for your letter in which you ex pressed your interest in material printed concerning freshmen in this paper. In our first issue, we had a notice concerning a special meeting on Sept. 19, especially for interested freshmen and sophomores to join the news paper staff. To our disappointment there was one freshmen who came. Where were you? The staff has its regular meet ings on Tuesdays at 3 o’clock at the Baptist Church in Wilkesboro. If you are still interested in the paper and have any suggestions, we urge you to attend these meetings. If this is not possible, we will wel come any contributions which you may have. Sincerely, Becky Landreth Editor THE COUGAR CRY staff & Editor, Having read the first copy of your paper, I would like to commend you upon the rather nice job you did. However, I notice the person who wrote the “editorial comments” seemed to feel that the newspaper staff and sophomores in general are far more knowledgable thanwe fresh men and therefore entitled to give advice on any and all matters. This is a mistake and will cause resent ment to your paper I think, Marci Daye, Freshman I have noticed-as have numerous others - that when entering highway 268 from Woodlawn it is impossible to see traffic on the highway, es pecially that coming from town. We think that school officials should take the proper steps to get a stop light INSTALLED because under present conditions this is obviously a traf fic hazard. Carol Caudill I want to thank all of you on THE COUGAR CRY staff for the mce job you did on the paper you put out. Anyone can see that you did a lot of work and most of it was just for us freshman. The letter to us was really neat. Thank you from all of us. Josh D. Peoples, Jr. YOU CAN HELP FILL THIS SPACE WE NEED A STUDENT CENTER THIS COLLEGE IS YOURS, PLEASE SUPPORT IT! Any college will become a rather routine place if no other activity goes on other than the scheduled class work. Wilkes Community Col lege is no exception. Beyond the class room experience it is up to you, the student, to determine the extent to which this institution will become a vibrant, exciting place to be. It is here solely for your benefit, There fore, you have a strong obligation not only to yourself but to the in° stitution, the student body at large, and to the sponsoring community to roll up your sleeves and take an active part in developing a full, well- rounded program that transforms an institution into a college. The degree to which you as an individual stu dent participate will, in a larger sense, determine the extent to which you become a part of the college and the returns that you receive for your investment of time and energy. Therefore, I challenge each of you to support your student lead ers, accept your responsibility to yourself and the college, and above all make this period the meaningful time in your life that it should be. There will be times during this current year that you may become distrubed concerning the facilities for your classes and your activities. In this regard you should consider the challenge and the opportunities these afford you. Few students have oppor tunities such as these to bring into existence a new institution. Students who have gone to established insti tutions this fall will have little op portunity to take part in the develop ment of the character of the insti tution. The most they can do is to conform to the existing pattern. You, on the other hand, will be setting the patterns for student life in the college to which others following you will have to conform. This is a grave responsibility and an all encom passing challenge. Do not take it lightly, I hav e full confidence that you will not.
