THE COUGAR CRY, NOV. 11, 1968, PAGE 3 Student Guidance Center CHEERLEADERS You don’t need Aladdin’s Lamp to make your plans come true! YOU ARE THE GENIE! Your choice of a career is one of the most important decisions in your life. Plan now!! Make the best possible preparation for your future. Study carefully and realistically your abilities and interests. Then, select a field where you can lise them to the best advantage. Consult your Guidance Counselor for verifica tion of the qualities you possess for your chosen vocation. The counseling staff is made up of two full-time counselors. Mrs. Virginia L. Bassett, Academic Counselor, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and a Mas ter of Science degree in Guidance and Counseling from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama. Before joining the staff of Wilkes Community College, she taught four years in the public schools of Caeboun County, An niston, Alabama. Mr. Joseph R. Austell, Voca tional Counselor, holds a Bache lor of Science degree in Indus trial Education and a Master of Science in Industrial Education from Clemson University, Clem- son, South Carolina. Before join ing the staff of WCC, Mr. Aus tell was a Staff Industrial En gineer with the USAF, and re tired as Lt. Colonel in Sept. 1967. He has taught school in the following areas: Kannapolis, N. C; Elkin N. C.; the University of Maryland (overseas division); McKendren College, Illinois; Trenton State College, New Jer sey; and John F. Kennedy High School, New Jersey. The facilities of the Guidance and Testing Center are available without charge to all students to assist them in selecting an appropriate academic or tech nical-vocational program and ul timate vocation. The counseling Center is located in the Student Personal Office in the administration building. The counselors are available to help students with problems of vocational and cur ricular choice, problems of ad justment to college life, and any other problems a student might wish to discuss with a profes sionally trained counselor. The Center administers ap titude and interest tests to any one who desires this service and maintains a file of accupa- tional information to help guide students in career selection. Students who are in doubt as to a sutiable academic major, who have been unable to make sat isfactory long-range vocational plans, or who are having academic difficulties may find these services of particular value. Olympiad 1968 A great controversy arose in the '68 Olympliad because of dis plays of racial supremacy by militant black athletes. Would rules governing this type of action be to discriminate or is the theme of the Olympics “peace and National fellowship* nearly a front for Nations to show the strength of their youth? These actions not only on the part of the American defeat the entire purpose of the Olympics. In the words of the ’68 Heavyeweight Boxing gold medal winner “No white Power, No Power, just A- merican Power.” This is the epitome of the competition of Nations. These are some of the hang-up of today’s problems. For one country to break this chain, an intereaction would move the whole thing back into its proper perspective. Who will be the first to lose face and make the sacrifice for the good of all people concerned and true sportsmanship? W.C.C. Annual The Annual Staff is hard at work on specific jobs concerning class pictures, organizations, and all-around planning of our yearbook. Students can look forward to a new, well rounded yearbook, and it is the annual staff sincerest hope that it will please every person at W. C.C. A great addition to the annual this year is individual class pic tures. This will certainly add a personal touch to every annual. With an eagerness to work and a serious outlook toward the future, the Annual Staff promises this year, 1968-69, THE year of The W. C. C. Annual. Steve Harvel Editor Most sensible people probably take this same view. But this brings up another question:* How are we to distinguish between those people who ‘can not sup port themselves’ and those people who have the ability but will not support themselves?* Floyd Rogers Playboy’s Unabashed Diction ary defines “belt* as a topless minidress.
