Nixon Sleeps With A Niffht Light! / Instructor Collects Wilkes History J. J. Anderson, with the help of a tape recorder and many of the county’s senior citizens, is compiling a history of Wilkes County. Mr. Anderson is a his tory and fine arts instructor at Wilkes Community College. Mr. Smink, head of the Audio- Visual Department, has been helping Mr. Anderson compile pictures of old buildings in Wilkes. The pictures are of such buildings as the old opera house, the first Crest’s store, and the tannery what was washed aw ay in the flood of 1940. Here are just a few of the gen erally unknown facts concerning Wilkes County: The first white settler in Wilkes County was the grand father of Sequoyah, the originator of the Cherokee alphabet. His son married an Indian maiden. The highway between Ronda and West Elkin is based with cot- ten. In 1930 there were 130 schools in Wilkes County. Traphill once had a college. When incorporated in 1921, Ronda had ten more citizens than today. Currently, Mr. Anderson has been working with the county’s older Negros concerning the local men who fought for the North during the Civil War. When completed, the history will be made available to the college. The students and all others connected with WCC should appreciate Mr. An derson’s attempt to make our heritage known. DRAFT PROBLEMS?
