PAGE 2, THE COUGAK CRY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1969 EDITORIAL Official Class Attendance Policy To the people of our times, success is a measure of progress. The difference between existence and a progressive civilization is the same measure as the difference between animals and man. Progress is the product of a cultivated society. Anyone can look around and see that we have made progress and continue to progress. These forward steps that we have taken have occurred not only in our world, our nation, and our state, but also in our community. The two neighboring towns most of us were raised in, are growing increasingly closer together. We have a community college where we can further our education very inexpensively. We have acquired a dam and reservoir for our safety and recreation, we have a vastly improved network of roads and highways. We also have the most educated assembly of students ever gathered in this area. That is progress. To the people of past generations, “We have it made.” Or do we? Progress is a demanding virtue. It cannot be set up on the shelf and admired. This quality of man does not sit back on its haunches and mature, it deteriorates. It must continually be altered and improved upon. We are faced with that task, that of keeping and improving what those who came before us have built. This is a greater job than has faced any generation before us. We, the students of this community must carry 90% of the load because we are the people in the spotlight in this community. We are the measure of youth in this area, therefore, we are under fire to improve what we found here. Since this school was founded in 1965, a lot of progress has been made. We have finally gotten our buildings, some of the most modern in the state. We have a permanent student center with no worry of it being closed down because a profit was not shown on the vending machines. An advisory council has been formed to work closer with the administration of the school. Our school is one of the few community colleges in the state that has a gym for its private use. Wilkes Community College has one of the most versatile list of courses available of any community college in the state. Yes, we have made progress. We cannot pause to enjoy what others have done for us. We must continue to progress, to climb to the top. The opportunity is here. It's up to you. IDOL Dean of Student Personnel Services THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE Wilkesboro, North Carolina EDITOR JERRY PARDUE STAFF To Be Selected FILL THIS SPACE JOIN THE COUGAR CRY STAFF ^ The following is the policy relating to the number of times a student can miss a class and still receive credit. The number of absences al lowable to a student in any cre dit course is twice the number of credit hours for the course. For example: A three credit hour course would allow a max imum of six absences for what ever the reason. Contact hours cannot be used. No credit grade is to be given by any instructor in cases where a student ex ceeds the absence limit. Any exception to this must be re commended by the instructor and approved by the Dean of Instruc tion prior to issuing a grade for the course. For counseling purposes, it was stated, and here is re emphasized, that each instructor should assume the responsibility, in the best interest of his stu dents, to notify student personnel when a student has missed one- half of the absences allowed. This would permit the counselors to investigate the cause of the ab sences and assist the student if possible. Any violation would be con sidered a serious breach of pol icy.
