PAGE 2, THE COUGAR CRY, SEPTEMBER 3, 1970 EDITORIAL You are starting a whole new year in a whole new way of life as a student. Start it with pride; start it with forcefulness; start it with the aini to take part and to have your voice heard in all matters concerning the school. Besides learning the fundamental subjects necessary to go into a chosen field, a student should learn, especially in college, to get involved in school and commun ity activities. The people who get the fastest promotions and make the highest wages are those who stand out in their profes sion, and those who stand out, usually, are those who take an active interest in their surroundings and those who get involved by showing proper initiative. How do you get involved? Join school clubs (we have several —something for everyone), be active in school sports, or join the newspaper or annual staff. If you cannot participate in school sports, be a spectator. It’s free! You may do all of these, but please do at least one. We have a listing of school clubs and organizations in this issue. Officers, members, and advisors of any one of these clubs and organizations would be delighted to have you as a member. Likewise, I invite any comments, criticisms, and suggestions you may have about the school, the community or the newspaper. All letters must be signed, to be printed, but names will be with held upon request. Any letters or material of a lewd or un acceptable nature will not be printed. The paper reserves the right to edit any material that is too long or covers too broad a subject. All correspondence should be sent to Maurice Craven, Cougar Cry, Wilkes Community College, Drawer 120, Wilkesboro, N. C. Don’t be a door nail! Work for your school. Take part in school activities. You will feel a part of your school. For a school to exist, it must have students and to thrive, it must have students who care. IF OUR SCHOOL THRIVES, YOU MUST CARE! Student Gov’t Holds First Meet The first meetings of The St udent Government were held on August 5 and 19. Charles Mitchell presided over both meetings. Or ientation, school activities and organizations, and new ideas were discussed at the meetings. Charles Mitchell announced that Mr. and Mrs. Klinkosum will be advisors to the club for the foll owing year. Those members at tending the meetings were Cha rles Mitchell, Sandra Russell, Linda Colvard, Patty Greene, Jeff Shoemaker, Jackie Johnson, and Mary Andrews. If you think those eye charts are crazy, try reading one of the doctor’s prescrip tions. JOIN THE COUGAR CRY STAFF THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE Wilkesboro, North Carolina Editor Maurice Craven Assistant Editor JaDWa Social Editor Sandra Russell Business Manager Wanda Barlow Photographers Johnny Warren, Gary Hendren The New Age Shakespeare said: "All the world’s a stage. And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts. His acts being seven ages. At first the infant. Mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms. Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel. And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school And then the lover Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress’ eyebrow. Then a soldier, Full of strange oaths, and beardad like the pard, Jealous in honor, sudden and quick in quarrel. Seeking the bubble reputation Even the cannon’s mouth. And then the justice, In fair round belly with good capon lined. With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut, Full of wise saws and modem instances: And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts Into the lean and slipper’d pantaloon. With spectacles on nose and pouch on side, His youthful hose, well sav’d, a world too vdde For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice. Turning again toward childish treble, pipes And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all. That ends this strange eventful history. Its second childishness and mere oblivion. Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.” If Shakespeare could be asked to revise his "seven ages” to fit today’s American society, he would most probably include an other age; he would most probably include another age; the age that falls between the school boy and the lover that includes char acteristics of both. It is the age that many of us have just now begun; the age of college. Some will play the part well; others not so well. Some will find other roles to be played: wife, husband, secretary, soldier. Whatever role you chose to play, play it with a maturity and self- respect that will evoke admiration rather than create alienation. There are many roles in life to be played. Play each one well so others will be offered to you. Welcome to WCC and good lu(*. A Reminder To The Frosh 2:00 — Meet with your advisor to arrange schedule.
