PAGE 6 — THE COUGAR CRY, MAY 10, 1974 Three Cheers For Landscapers Let’s hear it for the students enrolled in the Landscaping- Hortuculture program taught by Jim Daniel and B. Townes! It is they who deserve the credit for our grounds being as beautiful and well maintained as they are. This quarter, besides parti- cipatng in the various green house projects required of them such as seeding, trans planting, and learning the prop er use of lawn and garden equipment, they "have been landscaping Lovette Hall and planting shrubs near the park ing lot. Daniel and Townes have made some ambitious project plans for their students for the summer: a Japanese garden with fountain and pool, an ar boretum, nature trails on the hillside behind the buildings, beautification of the newly de veloped area, construction of golf greens and a lake in front of the campus, and further beautification work around the heart of the campus. These people have worked hard and will be working even harder in the near future. Let’s show them our appreciation by keeping our campus clean and not doing anything that would be detrimental to the appear ance of it. Since the above men tioned is to the benefit of our selves and those who will at tend this school in the future (not to mention the good im- presson we’d like to make upon visitors and the community, we owe at least that much. —James Brooks WCC ‘PITCHES IN' KEN WELBORNE OF WCC On Thursday, April 25, WCC students and faculty, inspired by Ken Welborn’s appeal to “pitch in,” descended upon designated polluted sites of 30-gallon bags full of beer cans and assorted trash. The activity was WCC’s con tribution to the National Col legiate Pitch-in Week, a drive co-sponsored by ABC Radio and Anheuser - Busch, aimed at cleaning up unsightly heaps of rubbish in localities where both have an affiliate and are with in reasonable distance of the closest college. Sponsors offer fine $1,000 na tional awards for the best planned and most effective ef fort. Local incentive prize money was donated by Forester Beverage Co., Inc. Trash collected by an estimat ed fifty students and staff was loaded onto a truck provided by the Town of North Wilkesboro and disposed of. After roughly two and a half hours the effort was completed. The group returned to the WCC campus, where each person en joyed a well-deserved picnic lunch. SGA president Brent Hollo way deemed the project “a total success,” and commented “we’d like to do it again before the quarter ends.” THE WCC TENNIS TEAM STUDENT CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP COMMUNION SERVICE NOW The waking sun showers its golden warmth upon the cool morning air. Butterflies float from flower to flower, nestling on tender petals. Cuddling couples stroll slowly in silence, the language of twinkling eyes. The world springs forth in shades of vibrant green as life is born, fresh and free. Now is that time. —Carlton Waddell KUDOS TO THE KERNEL Through rain and snow and dark of night, etc., Joe Austell, director of Physical Science Di vision has delivered and re trieved the COUGAR CRY to and from Elkin afore and aft its publication. The staff sal utes you. Colonel Austell. Many thanks for this invaluable service. To Commune With God Carlton Waddell It was a time of communion with God in its deepest sense. A small group of Student Christian Fellowship members, along with members of the faculty and other students, assembled together on April 11 to observe the Lord's Supper. The Reverend Jimmy Holland read the Scripture and deliver ed a short message. Then each person present partook of the elements in remembrance of the death of Jesus Christ. For each Christian, the ob servance of the Lord’s Supper is an opportunity to share in the suffering of Christ. By partaking of the bread and wine, Christians are reminded of the broken body and shed blood of Jesus. Such a return stirs the soul and spirit of Christians, strengthening the bond of love, both for each other and for God.
