Dr. Howard Thompson said that although he is a member of that committee he was not told how the com mittee voted. He added that the North Carolina State Board of Education vote at the Feb ruary 6 meeting will approve or disapprove the reaffirmation. If we pass both of these tests, then Wilkes Community Col lege will be accredited for a ten-year period. These ninety students are receiving Federal grants from $200 to $838 for a total of $60,852. (An average of $676 per student). This was possible because of a new source of Federal finan cial aid. Title IV of the High er Education Act of 1965. The Federal Program was available to eligible students for the first time during the 1973-74 academic year. The purpose of the Basic Grant is to provide eligible students with a “floor” of financial aid to help defray the costs of postsecondary education. Stu dent eligibility is primarily based on financial need deter mined on the basis of a form ula developed by the Office of Education and reviewed by Congress annually and is ap plied uniformly to all appli cants. The result of applying this formula is called the stu dent’s eligibility index and is used solely for purposes of de termining the amount of a student’s Basic Grant award. It should be noted that eligibility for Basic Grants is determined on the basis of financial need and that there is no scholastic determination made. During the 1974-75 academic year, an eligible student is one who has demonstrated financial need as reflected by the appli cation of the formula appro priate for that academic year; has begun his/her postsecond ary education after April 1, 1973, unless this postsecondary education was remedial or preparatory in nature or was taken while the applicant was simultaneously enrolled in sec ondary school; is enrolled or will be enrolled on a full-time basis which is generally defin ed to be 12 credit hours per semester, or trimester, or quar ter or 24 clock hours per week; and is enrolled in an eligible program offered by an eligible institution of postsecondary ed ucation. To apply for Basic Educa tional Opportunity Grant, the student must complete a form called “Application for Deter mination of Basic Grant Elig ibility.” Copies of the applica tion are available in the Stu dent Services Office at Wilkes Community College, other post secondary educational institu tions, guidance offices in high schools, public libraries, or by writing to BEOG, Box 2468, Washington, D. C. 20013, ADDITIONAL GRANTS ARE NOW AVAILABLE FOR CUR RENT AND NEW STUDENTS. Deadline for application for grants for this school year has tentatively been announced as March 15, 1975; students cur rently enrolled and those who enroll Spring Quarter (March 5) will be eligible if they meet the above requirements. For additional information, contact the Student Services Office at WCC. BEOG applications for the 1975-76 school year should be available around March 1, 1975. — By John V. Idol SPRING?? We Hope Spring?? Well, not quite — but we trust that the vases filled with fresh mums from the greenhouse have helped to brighten your day. The Stu dent Commons, Library, Learn ing Resources Center, and ev ery office area on campus — all are abloom with the vari colored floral beauties. Plans for the future include additional planters filled with tropicals and several large specimens to help with the in door landscape program now in full swing. In addition, some early bloomers may make their way into our buildings as well as in the outdoor flower beds. Speaking of the outdoors, you may be interested in the proj ect between Hayes and Thomp son Halls. A small pool with waterfall is under construction which will be the focal point of a Japanese garden. Too much to do, and too little time seem to be the story on the hillside and wildflower plots, but with longer days on the way, we will be spending more time in these areas. Annuals will be started in the greenhouse next month. The new varieties as well as the old favorites will give every spot on campus a fresh look after the long winter. Herbs will be grown for the first time and will have a plot of their own for future study. We will let you know more about these and other plans as we approach the spring season. — “B” Townes RICHARD JONES On Christmas day Richard Jones suffered a mild stroke. His recovery seems to be pro gressing well. He is on the job every day at school, and he is still busy with his early morn ing paper route. Richard, we wish you a speedy full recovery.
