Doc Announces Retirement

Phi Beta Lambda
Recruiting New Members
“I am asking that, effective
June 30, the trustees grant me the
title ‘president emeritus.’ ” With
these words of his pending
retirement. President Howard E.
Thompson shocked the college
staff gathered in the teaching
auditorium for a meeting last
week.
Having headed the institution
since July 1, 1965, Dr. Thompson
gets much of the credit for the
growth of the colelge from an
initial enrollment of 58 to its
present enrollment of approxi
mately 3,000.
Under “Doc’s” leadership,
three buildings were constructed
on the present 75-acre campus,
and three more buildings should
be completed by October, 1977.
A news story in the Wilkes
Journal Patriot calls the growth
of the college during Dr.
Thompson’s administration “one
of the major success stories in
education in North Carolina
during the past decade.”
Named to the Presidential
Screening Committee to recom
mend a successor were Austin A.
Adams, chairman, representing
the Board of Trustees. Others on
the committee include Bonnie L.
Rhodes and Milton J. Ingram,
trustees; Stokes R. Pearson,
college administrator; J. Jay
Anderson and Mary Nichols,
instructors; Steve Day, SGA;
John Cashion, alumnus; and
Gerald Lankford, ACC Advisory
Board and County Commissioner.
Betty J. Burcham will serve as
secretary.
The committee is asked to
submit five names to the Board of
Trustees by April 15. Deadline for
applications is set for February 1.
Dr. Thompson isn’t leaving
Wilkes. He says he wants to
continue to serve the college in
some capacity.
Freshman Class Officers
David Hayes, president of the
WCC chapter of Phi Beta
Lambda, reported a banner year
for 1975-76 activities, and looks
forward to another fine year in
’77. Phi Beta Lambda is the
national organization of business
students.
Selected theme for the coming
year is “Awareness of the
American Economic System,”
and the local organization plans,
among other things, fund raising
projects emd charity work. Plans
are also being made for recreation
activities, and the group expects
to have a lot of fun together. The
organization is open for member
ship.
Last year, eight young people
from the local group attended
their first state convention in
Charlotte. They placed five of the
eight in competitive events and
came away with three first place
awards, 1 second place and 1
third. Some of the members also
attended their first national
convention in Washington, D.C.
Phi Beta Lambda is the sister
organization of the high school
club. Future Business Leaders of
America. Its goal is to help the
student be more aware of the
business world while in school.
Requirement for joining the
club is that the applicant must be
taking at least one business
course. Anyone interested in
joining should contact David
Hayes, Billy Howell, or faculty
advisor, Dr. Jean Miles.
