J96^ THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUME 7, NO. 8 WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA MAY 18, 1977 Judicial Council To Decide Election Legality 'Vn: ROSEMARIE JARVIS — VICE-PRESIDENT (Photo by David Swaringen) What Is Your Name ? Aren’t names strange? Of course I can speak from experience on this subject. I have the most common, uncommon name you ever want to hear. Wilkes Community College has some interesting names. Wouldn’t it be interesting if we could use some of these names out of context to see how they would work out? We might find it slightly amusing. Let’s try it! Think about these! -What would you do if someone asked you the directions to Phillip Canada? -Would you be insulted or pleased if someone wished you a Steve Day? -Would you declare war on another country if the king shot at you with a Doug Cannon? -Would you take it as a slur on your athletic equipment if someone stated that you had a Dusty Ball? -Do you think a lawn watering system would sell if its trade mark were Joey Sprinkle? -Would you buy a cigarette lighter called a Shawn Sparks? Corney, right? Have you ever wondered why some names are common and some are not? Did you know that the most common last name in the world is “Johnson”. The most common first name in the world is “David”. So, David Johnson must be the most common person in the world. Some people really fit their names, or their names fit them. Think about your friends. If you could take their name and build a person from it, would it look like them? Why were some words picked to be names and others left out? Sure there are names like John, Paul, and Harry, but what is wrong with Doorknob, Tree, and Dirt? They probably mean as much as names do. Names have no definitions: they are just words. Names are great. The best ones are the unusual ones. Unusual names make unique individuals. When I think of all the Steves, Davids, Johns, and Mikes in the world, it makes me glad to be a Dusty. At least when a teacher calls the roll, four people don’t answer to my name. From now on look at names differently. They are more than personal tags. Names are minia tures of each individual. Carry them with pride, think about mine, and laugh. -Dusty Ball In one of the most hotly contested Student Government Association elections to be held at Wilkes Community College no candidate for president received a simple majority of the total votes cast. The breakdown was as follows: Name Holbrook Hanks Bumgarner Pardue Mason Votes Percent. 81 36.3% 65 39 28 10 29.1% 17.5% 12.6% 4.5% KAREN HOLBROOK (Photo by David Swaringen) TOTALS 223 100% Under the provisions of the college constitution, a run-off election was called for the two top vote getters and on Wednesday, May 4, the run-off election was held. Before the polls closed at 4:00 p.m., however, voting irregular ities and inadeauate supervision of the ballot box caused impoundment of the ballots and the necessity of a judicial council ruling.
