^965 THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUME 8, NO. 1 WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA SEPTEMBER 20, 1977 WCC Gets President New President Looks Forward To Good Year BY KEN HOLMES Doctor Daniel is a very, very busy man, but he made time to see me this week, and I am very much impressed. Doctor Daniel is very happy to have come to an institution which has, in his words, “a fine program and is a tribute to Doctor Thompson.” The “good reputation” of the school and “fine program” leads Doctor Daniel to believe that we can expect a good fall quarter. The decrease in veterans’ benefits he hopes will be offset by the new programs he foresees for the school. These include criminal justice courses, banking courses, and courses of interest to savings and loan personnel. Doctor Daniel feels that a high school program apart from the G.E.D. program, aimed at the adults in our community, leading to a high school diploma, with credit through the county system, would make educational progress possible for those on a schedule which makes ordinary education impossible. This would not only help college enrollment but would be of enormous service to the community. In anticipation of the Board of Trustees’ approval, negotiations are going on with the School of Artistic Beauty, hoping to add their curriculum to the offerings here. Cosmetology would be a welcome addition; it is a growing field. Doctor Daniel intends to maintain a “most aggressive recruitment program.” He in tends not only to maintain the schools present capabilities but to grow in its service to the community. Doctor Daniel regrets entry into the new buildings will not be possible until after the fall quarter. The new buildings are in his estimation “76%” complete. Providing access to pedestrians into the new buildings has required alternate funding and hopefully will be instituted in time. The W.C.C. Endowment organization, a nonprofit outfit which contributes proceeds, has been activated. Hopefully it will be able to provide funds for a critically needed outdoor rec reational complex. The quality programs here have produced fine students. We can be proud of their accomplishments. Doctor Daniel sees no reason why the school cannot do even better and produce “fine PLUS” students. The part-time employee setup created by Doctor Thompson gave us the necessary flexibility to avoid faculty losses due to state funding reductions. Ten positions had to be eliminated, but no full-time staff was cut. Doctor Daniel, looking down the road, foresees our own Early Childhood Center and other projects will bring interest on campus. He intends to maintain an open door policy. In his own words, “service is the very reason for my office’s existence.” He intends to maintain the best possible atmosphere of respon sibility and sincerity of purpose and still have a good time helping us along. He hopes we feel the same way about our duties here. I hope we do too. Such a worthy dedication should be the school’s motto. DR. DAVID E. DANIEL, PRESIDENT m The New President: Some Facts Dr. David E. Daniel became the second president of WCC on July 1, 1977. He follows Dr. Howard Thompson who served as presi dent of the college from its inception in 1965. President Daniel is a native South Carolinian. He was born in Gaffney, South Carolina, and attended Furman University. He received a B.A. degree in Sociology from there in 1958. Following college, Dr. Daniel enrolled in Crozer Theological Seminary in Rochester, New York, and was awarded the Master of Divinity degree in 1961. He received the Ed.D. from N.C. State in 1975. His work experience includes pastoring Zebulon Baptist Church. Following this, he served in several capacities at Louisburg College. Most recently, he served as Dean of Instruction at Isothermal Community College. Dr. Daniel plans to move to the Wilkesboro’s in September. He has one son, Jody, who will be attending WCC. Mrs. Daniel, who prefers to be known as Dee-Dee, is also a native of South Carolina. Dr. Daniel has been very busy in recent weeks. He has given the Developmental Studies Program a shove and has also initiated new curriculums in Cosmetology and Police Science. In addition, he is working for funding of the James Larkin Pearson Memorial Library and has plans for an artist-in- residence program here at WCC. These are the facts. But there is more. Dr. Daniel is a warm, caring person, and we’re glad he is here. Welcome New Recruits As students in college, student is not a totally accurate name for you. You are recruits. Recruits in a war on ignorance, yours and everybody elses. In this college, you will be given assistance by teachers and staff. They will not be training you. They will be helping you to broaden your understanding and solve your learning problems. This is a multi faceted institution. Ask questions, find out what you want to learn, and enjoy learning it. Don’t be bashful. There are some very interesting people here and chances are they will find you interesting too. High school was boot camp. College is war. Here you capture knowledge.
