AMANDA PORTER
Have you looked closely at the
Media Center lately? Have you
noticed that many shelves are so
full, bookends can’t be used or
that books and equipment spill
over onto file cabinets, desks,
tables, and the floor? This
reporter did and, after a little
checking around, uncovered
some pretty interesting facts.
For instance: The library was
orginally planned to hold a
maximum of 20,000 volumes. It
now contains 35,000. One
gentleman donated his entire
personal library to Wilkes
Community College. It is still
packed in boxes. There is not shelf
room available.
Newspapers older than two
weeks can not be kept due to lack
of space, and magazines not
frequently used must be sacrificed
for others. It is almost impossible
to use the older magazines which
can be kept for these must be
designated to storage. Microfilm
ing magazines create additional
room, but there is no suitable
space to use the films. The two
previewers share one small table.
Several older previewers are
available, but there is no suitable
space to use them. Books must be
stored in the preview room
creating disturbances for anyone
who is working there. There are
no separate area for counseling,
private conferences, group work,
or GED instuction. There are no
soundproof rooms for typing
practice or movie viewing and no
space to create these rooms. Three
people share a one-person office.
There are neither sufficient filing
cabinets nor sufficient outlets. All
equipment is run by only two
main power sources. OSHA
regulations (Safety and Health
Administration) are violated dai
ly-
Many manhours are wasted
cleaning books of mold and
mildew from lack of air
circulation. Money is also wasted
as valuable books (costing an
average of $15 up to $600 for
encyclopedia sets) are ruined.
Books jammed together on
shelves eventually develop torn
spines and bowed covers. Media
equipment must be wiped down
Letters To Tljc Editor:
Dear Editors:
You have heard of the saying
“Be kind to your webbed-footed
friends cause a duck maybe
somebodys mother.” Well some
one ran over one of our ducks and
killed it dead. I have thought
about this today,--4-25-78— the
exact date this abomination
occured. How could this crime
have ever happened? What foul
person could envision such a
deed?
When I found the poor bird, it
was squashed flat and lying in the
road.It’s lifeless form pelted by
drops of rain. So much for the
dead duck. What I want to write
about is the mother-ducker that
would run over a duck with at
least 1,0(X) pounds of steel. How
many people have observed the

beauty of our ducks? The one that
was hit had to be the only wild
one. WCC has been a haven for
the harmless creatures. We lured
the birds with our lush green grass
and beautiful pond; for what, but
to be crushed by some thoughtless
individual. I can not understand
how such a thing took place unless
the duck committed suicide or a
person committed fowlicide.
I hope the person that did this
crime will realize the damage
inflicted. I hope that this person is
forever haunted by visions of
dead ducks until forgiveness is
asked and maybe then if a public
apology is oftoed, it just might
free that person of guilt.

Help!!
f
Has anyone noticed anything
strange in the library lately? Well
I for one have. It seems like every
time 1 go up there the book
shelves and other equipment are
trying to smash me. The reason
for this is because the library is
over crowded, not by people but
by books. It is not the library
staffs’ fault, they are doing a

with special cleaning fluid to
protect against mold and mildew.
Audio visual equipment suffers
too. Rust, especially of film
containers, is a big problem.
To keep a media center
“up-to-date” new material must
be ordered regularly. But the
librarians have been told that no
more space is available. With the
addition of new buildings, more
room was hoped for, but this
seems to be in vain. When the
re-affirmation team from the
Southern Association visited Wil
kes Community, they termed our
Learning Resources Division as
“grossly deficient”. In answer,
WCC responded that the old
student commons area would be
used for media growth. Why
then, now that our accreditions is
affirmed, is this area planned for
something else?
What solutions can be found?
The media center is used by
almost everyone involved in the
college and community. An
average head count shows 7,500
people use the library a month.
Shouldn’t the center get top
priority?
What do you think a teacher
who is friendly, cheerful, and
always helpful-no matter what
the problem or who has it? One
who never loses his temper or his
patience? An instructor students
can speak with about problems
without being made to feel a
dummy (the most important
quality for a teacher to possess)?
Never happen! Too good to be
true? Not at all! We have such a
person here at Wilkes Community
College and his name is Ira G.
Gambill.
Needless to say, he’s a favorite
instructor at W.C.C. He has
earned students’ deepest respect
and gratitide with his unending
patience and unique ability to
explain even the most complex
problems in such a way that an
average student can comprehend
them. Although he teaches many
different courses, he still makes
time in his busy schedule to give
students extra help when needed.
His education began at Mul
berry Elementary School, then on
to North Wilkesboro High
School. After graduating from
N. W. High, he spent four years in
the Navy. He was stationed at
Alameda Naval Base in California
for about a year. During his stint
in the Navy he crossed the Pacific
three times. Upon leaving the
Navy, he attended Applachian
State University where he received
his B.A. and M.A. He also has
credits at Carolina University.
He began his teaching career
with one year at Asheville City
Schools, then taught nine years at
Lees-McRae in Banner Elk before
coming to Wilkes Community
College. He has been an instructor
at W.C.C. for the past nine years.
It Is Cold Inside
On the twenty-fifth and
twenty-sixth it was cold inside the
school buildings. The building are
not old. Why are they drafty?
Will the new buildings be as
faulty? I noticed the roof still
leaks. What gives? The building
program here seems impressive
but is it? Are we getting
representations of buildings?
good job with what space they
have. The problem is that the
library is running out of space,
and they do not have any place to
expand. Some of the students at
W.C.C. have signed a paper
saying that they would like to see
the Library expanded. We are all
hoping that this paper will help
solve the problem. If it does not
help, then very soon we will not be
able to turn around in'the library.
RENEA TAYLOR
He teaches Accounting, Short
Hand, Office Machines, and
Business Math, among other
courses.
Mr. Gambill resides in Mul
berry Community on Highway 18
North. His hobby, gardening, is
done on a fairly extensive scale.
He has a variety of fruit trees
which include Dwarf Apple,
Peach, and Chestnut, among
others, and also thirteen grape
vines. Not only does he tend to
these, he also has a large
greenhouse where he raises spring
bedding plants, tomatoes the year
’round--and even orchids.
W.C.C. is indeed lucky to have
such a great instructor and such a
nice person. To Mr. Gambill-a
