PAGE 2 — THE COUGAR CRY. APRIL 30, 1980 Mayfest Artists SHELAGH GAFFIKIN Shelagh Gaffikin, our own visiting artist, has made a large contribution to the success of Mayfest. She is not only coordinating the personal appearances of the craftspersons and visiting artists, but is also choreographing the Broadway Musical Revue and the Maypole Dance. She is accomplished in ballet, mime, character, jazz, modern, tap, and Slimnastics. She has a long list of teaching experiences as well as performances. Her time her at WCC will be up in just a short time but the impression she has made on this area will remain indefinitely. JERRY BANGLE Jerry Bangle brings quality music to Wilkes Community College once more. He conducts the Symphony “Pops” concert and the Jazz Ensemble Cabaret dance. Jerry received his B.A. degree in cello and composition from East Carolina University. He received his M.A. degree and was a graduate teaching fellow at Appalachian State University. In addition to conducting, Jerry has worked with national artists and popular groups and plays in the Chamber Music Ensemble. These are but a few examples of his talent, but perhaps his most valuable gift is his versatality and style. BUD MAYES Bud Mayes is a very important part in the success of Mayfest. He is the director of the Broadway Musical Revue and an integral part of all the productions of the weekend. Bud began the theatre program over twelve years ago and has directed over forty productions. These among other things demonstrate his hard working philosophy. “Getting the show on the road” is hard enough, but making it enjoyable for everyone in touch with it is quite an achievement. MICHAEL QUIGLEY Michael Quigley is the Visiting Artist at Davidson County Community College. Michael, a pantomimist and creative drama tist, has held residencies through state arts commissions in Florida and South Carolina. He trained at DON EPHRAIM We are fortunate to have the assistance of Don Ephraim, a renowned painter and sculptor. His art, inspired by the wooded surroundings in which he lives, shows the good, simple life around him. He is currently Director of the Wilkes Art Guild. MARTA ZORINA Marta Zorina is the Visiting Artist at Surry Community College. She was the soloist with the State Theatre Eger and Budapest’s Philharmonic Orchestra, studied and performed abroad, and is recognized as an outstanding professional dancer, actress, teacher, and choreographer. Notable is her interpretation of Lady McBeth, an intense dramatic piece on Bartok’s music. Mademoiselle Zorina will perform Friday evening and conduct a ballet workshop, free of charge, in the student lounge at 3:00 P.M. Saturday. RENEE VINCENT Ms. Vincent is the Visiting Artist at Catawba Valley Technical College. She received her M.F.A. in Acting from Southern Methodist University. Renee’s background includes experience in films, theatre, and television. Ms. Vincent will present a dramatic characterization on Friday evening and will be available at the Visiting Artist Booth to talk with those interested in a career in acting or dance. MS. CHERYL R. EARP Ms. Cheryl R. Earp is the visiting artist at Haywood Technical Institute. Her talent has been shown in all areas of theatre including acting, directing, and technical production. In addition to her practical experience, she is interested in theatre history, especially late 19th century British individuals. Yale University of Drama, the University of Tampa Internation al Mime Institute and the Festival of Magic Mt. Mime School. Mr. Quigley will give presenta tions on stage Friday evening and again on Saturday at 2:00 P.M. He will also be available at the Visiting Artist Booth during off stage hours. PATRICK CAUBLE Mr. Cauble is the Visiting Artist at Isothermal Community Col lege. He is a singer who accompanies himself on the lute or guitar. His songs range from Renaissance to Modern. Mr. Cauble was a member of the faculty of the North Carolina School of the Arts before become a visiting artist. He will give a presentation on stage Friday evening and will be available at the Visiting Artist Booth to talk to people about his art form. BILL YOUNG Bill Young is a well-known personality in this area with exceptional talent. He is an executive with the Northwestern Financial Corporation and an impressing Nashville sound. He has been playing the guitar since the age of ten and is a personal friend and colleague of Chet Atkins. Performing with him will be David Johnson on drums, Marshall Craven on electric bass guitar, and Billy Ray Johnson on 12-string guitar. K. SUSANNE YOWELL K. Susanne Yowell is an expert in Textile Craftwork. Her art includes both functional pieces (clothing) and visually expressive work. Through her craft she portrays events as well as interpreting existing objects. “I try to give spirit to experience and form to the events of the mind.” Ms. Yowell is currently at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, North Carolina.
