THE COUGAR CRY, APRIL 30. 1980 — PAGE 3 JENNY NELSON Jenny Nelson received her Bachelor of Arts in political science from Duke University. She studied history of art in graduate school at Byrn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Ms. Nelson has also studied piano and violin. She became interested in design and modern jewelry while in Florence, Italy. In Florence she studied under Tamio Fujimura, an American sculptor. Mayfcst Artists KEN NELSON Ken received his Bachelor in Fine Arts at the Rhode Island School of Design. He has also studied at the University of California at Berkeley and Assumption College in Worcester, Massachusetts. While serving in the Army, Ken worked at the Joan Peterson Gallery in Boston. Mr. Nelson then received his Master of Fine Arts at Villa Schifanoia, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Florence, Italy. Mr. Nelson has exhibited his work in both the United States and Italy. Since 1977, Ken and his wife Jenny have been residents of Wilkes County. QUIVER D. Quiver is a Sioux Indian who comes to us from Gallup, New Mexico. His jewelry collection comes from the tribes of the Navaho, Zunio, Hopi, and others. His collection includes all types of handmade Indian rings, bracelets, squash blossoms, and other artistic pieces. AUDREY OLSON Ms. Olson is the Visiting Artist at the Technical College of Alamance. She received her B.F.A. from Michigan State University and did graduate work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Ms. Olson will present silk screen demonstrations and have on display many exciting examples of her art form. ANDREA AND ROBERT ROSEN Andrea and Robert Rosen are Visiting Artists at Caldwell Community College and Techni cal Institute. Andrea received her M.M. from the Eastman School of Music and Robert’s degrees are from the University of Illinois and Michigan State University. Andrea (Clarinet) and Robert (Percussion) will present “the DUO” on stage Saturday at 12:(X) noon. Included in the presenta tion will be Duo Sonata by Jere Hutcheson and Variation Duos by Frank McCarty. Both pieces were written for the Rosens in 1979. It is interesting to note that it takes four people one hour just to set up the percussion instrumenta tion for such a performance. Also, this husband and wife team is the only group of its kind in the United States. LOUISE VICKERY Louise Vickery is definitely a fresh new personality in local art. She comes from an artistic family and was influenced by her son, who is an accomplished potter. For one who is self-taught with no formal training, Ms. Vickery is an exceptional artist. DOROTHY HITCHCOCK Dorothy Hitchcock is presently at Virginia Blue Ridge Technical College. Her expertise is in the field of weaving. BILL McCLANE Bill is a relative newcomer to art having only begun his formal work at the Wilkes Cultural Arts Center less than two years ago. He brings with him a diverse background, having completed a degree in chemical engineering and done graduate work in theology and psychology. The science background has had a pronounced effect on his work as his knowledge of the chemistry of the glass formulation and willing ness to experiment with forhi and color combine. “I think of pottery as a means of self expression, much as any truly rewarding occupation should be. The carved pieces are my favorite to make, as while they retain the symmetry of wheel thrown work, they allow the statement of varied and radical expressions.” VICK SPENCER Vick Spencer is a local artist whose art form is Stained Glass. Vick’s interest in glass as an art medium began at an early age, and he has done extensive research and traveled throughout North Carolina and Florida, talking with other artists and attending art shows. Vick is a self taught artist who produces original art pieces. During the Mayfest, Vick will give demonstrations and answer questions in addition to displaying his works. NANCY EDWARDS Ms. Edwards is presently located at the Penland School of Crafts and is currently included on the 1980 North Carolina Visiting Artists Candidates list. Her art form embraces the artistic design and fashion of precious metals into jewelry. On special items, Ms. Edwards also utilizes special acrylics that enhance the beauty of her creations. DAN FREDERICKS Dan Fredericks began art at the age of seven on the New England coast. After high school he set out around the United States and Canada to learn about the various semi-cultures of the continent. He spent some time doing interpretive artwork for the North Carolina State Parks system. In 1977 he directed his energies on his own creative intuitions. He has worked closely with the Wilkes Cultural Art Center, instructing and preparing brochure illustrations. His one-man show at Northwest ern Art Gallery showcased his unique talent. RICHARD MAYBERRY Richard Mayberry is a Visiting Artist at Anson Technical Col lege. He is a visual artist specializing in drawing with graphite pencils. He also has worked in other drawing media, photography, wax sculpture, painting and some types of printmaking. All works are originals and his unique approach to his art form is most unusual. Mr. Mayberry’s M.F.A. was awarded by Queens College of CUNY. LYNN FREDERICKS Lynn Fredericks, originally from South Carolina, has been a professional basketmaker for a couple of years. She makes traditional Appalachian egg bas kets, and originally designed baskets. Currently, Lynn is teaching basket weaving for the Wilkes Cultural Art Center and the Senior Citizens Center. She has taught in the past for Surry Community College. DAVE STURGILL Dave Sturgill, Master Crafts man at Piney Creek, designs and builds many different kinds of instruments; banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, and lutes are within his realm. He travels to schools and organizations doing demonstra tions and discussing the history and development of the various instruments. He has visited the Wilkes Community College camp us in the recent past.
