THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE
VOLUlflE 13 - NO. 3
WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA
DECEMBER 14, 1983

Message from
the President
“Count your blessings”...more
than the words from a song, and
not too trite to say again! During
the holiday season may we think
seriously about how fortunate we
are. May our feelings of
thanksgiving be manifested in
good deeds and a generous
outpouring of spirit. May we
consider our good fortune a
stewardship with many responsi
bilities of service.
On behalf of the administra
tion, faculty, and staff of Wilkes
Community College, I wish for
each one a happy and meaningful
Christmas. The joy of Christmas
and the rest from our studies
should renew us all for a new
year.

Think About It
To be heard, listen.
To be seen, see.
To be friended, be a friend.
To be needed, need.
To be accepted, accept.
To be loved, love.
To be alive, live.
Ideas are funny little things.
They won’t work unless you do.
Past experience should be a
guide post, not a hitching post.
The best and most beautiful
things in the world cannot be seen
nor touched but are felt in the
heart.
We are all manufacturers, —
making goods, making trouble, or
making excuses.
A teacher affects eternity; he
can never tell where his influence
stops.

A variety of plans are in the
works for the drama department
during the winter quarter. During
December, Brandon Daughtery is
directing a short Christmas
special, “A Christmas Tea”, to be
presented to numerous children’s
groups in the county.
January will be a busy month.
The children’s theatre class will be
presenting “Grimm’s Fairy
Tales” for various classes in the
Wilkes County School System.
January 27 and 28 will see three
student directed shows in an
evening of varied entertainment.
Directors and plays include,
Donna Moore with “Imprompt”,
Melissa Pena with “Irresistable
Albert”, and Nancy Huffman
with “Birdbath”. Also during
January, work will begin on
“Uncommon Women and Oth
ers.” The play to be directed by
Helen Caudill will go on tour
during the spring.
Support your drama depart
ment by your presence either on
stage, behind stage, or in the
audience.

Over 90% of
WCC Students
Qualify for
Federal Grant
Services
It is estimated that over 90% of
the students at WCC in any given
quarter qualify for the services
provided by the Special Services
Federal Grant.
Any student who is a first
generation college student — that
is, neither parent has a 4-year
college degree — qualifies for aid
provided by Special Services.
What is offered through the
Grant?
1) Tuturing-in nearly every
subject area, and it’s free to
those who qualify.
2. Counseling-personal, aca
demic, financial, and career
counseling.
3. Special interest testing-to
pinpoint special abilities.
Students are encouraged to
apply for membership in Special
Services. Even some students who
are not first generation qualify:
physically handicapped or eco
nomically disadvantaged students
are also admitted to the program.
Offices for Special Services are
located in room 806, Technical
Arts Building. For further infor
mation see Dr. Barbara Holt,
Director, or Mrs. Barbara Alli
son, Counselor.
Contentment depends little on
position, but a lot on disposition.
