PAGE TWO - THE COUGAR CRY, MAY 28, 1984
Editorial
As the 1983-1984 school year
closes at Wilkes Community
College, time should be taken to
thank all the hard working faculty,
staff and students who have made
this year memorable. Several
things have happened here at
Wilkes Community College. The
faculty and staff have, as always,
worked hard to insure that all
students receive the best possible
education and assistance. The staff
in the Student Services office have
been tremendous in their support
of all the student activities this past
year. Dr. Bob Thomspon and
Shirley Church have been two of
the moving forces concerning
student activities. Alan
Whittington, Student Activities
Director, deserves an extremely
large thank you and a pat on the
back from the students for all the
activities and programs he has set
up this year.
A hearty round of applause and
pat on the back is also due the
1983-1984 Student Government
Association. They have worked
extremely hard to provide the
student body with the type of
activities which the students have
asked for. They provided the
students with two dances and an
extremely good concert at Spring
Fling. The bands which were
chosen pleased all the students who
were in attendance at these
activities. The activities during
Winterfest Week and other times
during the year took long hours of
hard work by members of the
SGA. Again, congratulations to all
the hardworking faculty, staff and
students who have made this
school year the best possible.

Lois Lane Wins
Secretary of the
Year A ward
During National Secretaries’
Week, WWWC Radio Station and
Holiday Inn held a contest to select
a Secretary of the Year. To enter a
secretary in the contest, the
secretary’s boss had to submit a
letter saying why he/she felt the
secretary should win the Secretary
of the Year Award. Winners were
based on the content of the letter.
Prizes were 12 long-stem roses
and a 3 day/2 night vacation for
two at the Holiday Inn in Orlando,
Florida. Prizes were awarded by
Holiday Inn and WWWC Radio
Station.
Mrs. Lane and her family will be
visiting Disney World and
Orlando in the Fall. Mrs. Lane
works for Stokes Pearson in the
Office of Continuing Education.
She has worked for the college for
18 years; and according to Mr.
Pearson, is most deserving of this
award.

Message to
Graduates
Congratulations! You set a goal,
that of gradution from Wilkes
Community College, and now at
least two years later you have
reached that goal. We are proud of
you!
We have watched with interest
as you made your many and varied
individual contribution to classes,
organizations and all areas of life
at Wilkes. Many of you have done
this while holding down full or part
time jobs. We have observed the
leadership and responsibility you
have assumed in the different roles
you have fulfilled. We have seen
you as you encourage and support
each other when the need is there.
We have enjoyed your fun and
your humor. We appreciate the
specialness you have brought to
Wilkes.
As you move on to your next
goal, we wish you well. We expect
to hear good things from and
about you as you go on with the
task of becoming the very best that
you can be.

SGA Corner
The 1983-1984 school year has
been a good one for the Student
Government Association. The
support of the student body, the
administration, and the
faculty/staff enabled the ’83-’84
SGA members to do many good
things. For example, students
enjoyed themselves at the
Sugarcreek concert while the
faculty/staff and the administra
tion enjoyed themselves at the
breakfast held on Teacher’s
Appreciation Day.
As the new administration takes
office, we hope that we, too, will
have the support of the student
body, the administration, and the
faculty/staff. With your continued
support, we can expand on the
good things that were accomplish
ed this year and make 1984-1985
even more successful.

My Feelings on
Graduation
Graduation is a time of sadness
and of joy. It is a time for
reflection. My two years here at
WCC have been a time of
happiness. Being involved in the
many activities and extensively
involved in the SGA have been a
good experience for me. I feel relief
and some sadness about
graduating. The many friends I
have made, I will miss, but I hope
to see again. I am looking forward
to my future with bright open eyes.
I would like to wish good luck to all
the graduates of 1984 and to the
future graduates. I also would like
to challenge the 1984-85 SGA to
have as outstanding a year as the
1983-84 SGA had. I hope that
WCC and its students continue on
the bright path that holds the
future.

BSU Convention
The weekend of March 30 was
one to remember for the many
BSU members across the state of
North CaroUna. We are talking
about the state convention at
Camp Caraway. Six BSU
members from WCC along with
their sponsors, attended the
convention. The overall theme was
commUNITY. Two of our
members are serving state
positions. They are Lisa Jennings
and Dean Lackey.
There were many helpful
workshops. They were divided into
three main categories — the seniors,
community, and leadership. We
learned such things as planning
bible studies, conventions, and
what the work of missions were all
about. This weekend also helped us
reaUze our importance in our
community as an individual and as
a group working together. We did
not consider this weekend as a
vacation, because we all feel it has
had a long range effect on our lives.

Phi Beta Lambda
The WCC Phi Beta Lambda
would hke to thank everyone for
their pariticpation in our raffle
ticket sales. By selling raffle tickets
good for one chance in the drawing
for $100 of gasoline, we were able
to raise enough money to attend
the Phi Beta Lambda State
Convention in Raleigh. Thanks
again to all those who purchased
tickets or helped promote ticket
sales. Also, we would like to
congratulate Mr. Harold Wood of
Route 3, Wilkesboro, who won the
SlOO in the drawing on March
30th. Congratulations Mr. Wood!
On April 6, our PBL chapter
along with advisors Jim Barrow
and Randy Joyner, traveled to
Raleigh to attend the state
convention which was held at the
Marriot, April 6, 7 and 8. This
provided us with an excellent
opportunity to become familiar
with other PBL chapters from
across the state, as well as to
become aware of the skills
necessary to complete in the
business world. Among the
planned activities was a workshop
on leadership, as well as
competitions in public speaking
and parlimentary procedure.
There were also written
examinations administered to
those who wished to compete in the
areas of economics, business law
and accounting, as well as in other
business subjects. Robert Blom, of
our chapter entered the economics
competition and won 4th place.
This was an outstanding
performance, so be sure to
congratulate Robert when you see
him. We’re proud of you, Robert!
On Saturday evening, the
convention came to a close, with a
final awards banquet and dance,
where a good time was had by all.
On Sunday we departed with
enthusiastic plans for “next year.”
If you are in a business program
here at WCC, come to one of our
meetings, held each Thursday at
1:00 p.m. in Room 145. We would
welcome you in our plans to make
PBL an educational and career
enhancing experience for all its
members.
