MERRY CHRISTMAS ROUND THE WORLD
U
Dr. David E. Daniel
President’s
Message
We enter the Christmas season
on the coattails of the
Thanksgiving holiday, two
occasions which represent a time
for rejoicing and fellowship with
our families and friends.
At Wilkes Community College,
we enjoy a strong fellowship in our
family of faculty, staff and
students throughout the year.
What a good feeling it is to have
such a close-knit group of people
to work with each day.
As Christmas passes and we
enter the new year, 1985 will be one
of celebration for Wilkes
Community College when we
begin our 20th year of service to
the community. We see 1985 as a
20-year celebration of our school’s
accomplishments, and we look
forward to what each new year
promises.
On this Christmas, we wish for
each member of the WCC family a
very safe and happy holiday.

maintained a 3.0 grade-point-
average. In addition to his class
schedule, he tutored with Special
Services and also worked six to
eight hours a week in the WCC
work-study program.
Rhymer was selected for the
state Special Services Award over
students from Western Carolina
and Fayetteville State Universities.
There also were competitions for
other state projects including
Upward Bound and Talent Search.
A total of 48 programs of this
nature are conducted at two - and
four-year colleges across the state.
In the Special Services
competition, each appHcant had to
submit an essay, high school and
college transcripts, and
recommendations from former
teachers and current supervisors
affiliated in the Special Services
program. Dr. Barbara Holt,
director of Special Services at
WCC, said that Rhymer was
qualified for the award because of
his outstanding leadership and
social skills. “Robert has proven to
be a leader among the group of
tutors at WCC. He has gained the
respect of both tutors and tutorees
by being well-prepared for all
sessions and meetings."
The Special Services program at
WCC provides low-income
students with supportive services
including counseling, skills
instruction, tutoring and
information concerning college
admissions and fmancial aid. The
program is designed to assist
eligible students to enter, continue
or resume academic programs and
help them to attain academic,
social and personal success.
Rhymer is the son of Charles
and Mary Rhymer of Route 1,
Wilkesboro and is a 1984 graduate
of West Wilkes High School.
While at West High, Rhymer
was actively involved in the
Upward Bound program.
sponsored by Appalachian State
University. In addition to his
perfect attendance record at group
meetings and activities. Rhymer
published articles in the N.C.
Upward Bound Literacy Magazine
and the ASU Upward Bound
Newsletter.
Randy Swing, ASU coordinator
and counselor of Upward Bound,
said Rhymer was an “active
leader” in the program and
“empitomized what Upward
Bound is all about.” Upward
Bound helps students gain the
skills, motivation and confidence
necessary for collegiate success.
Eligibility is based on income
guidelines established by the
Department of Education and
evaluation of the applicant’s
potential for benefitting from the
program.
At WCC, Rhymer is enrolled in
the college transfer program and
following graduation, he plans to
attend ASU and major in
Accounting.
