The Boy’s Home of North
Carolina at Lake Waccamaw,
North Carolina was founded in
1954 for “on-the-streets” boys, 9-
18 years old. The Jaycees are one
of several community organiza
tions that support the Boy’s Home
by maintaining a cottage at Lake
Waccamaw. The CHOIR will
perform a short program of
Chrsitmas music before each act of
SCROOGE. The Jaycees will be
selling advance tickets and
Christmas cider and cookies at
intermission to raise money for the
Boy’s Home.
The holiday is not complete
without a visit from Scrooge
warming our hearts and filling our
ears with a melodious “God bless
us everyone.” It is a treat you won’t
want to miss.
The public is invited during
intermission to view the mural
“done” by students under the
direction of the Artist-in-
Residence Richard Mayberry in
the High School Cafeteria. Mr.
Mayberry was in the high school
for a week as part of the Artist-in-
Residence program.
O Little Town of
Bethlehem
On Christmas Eve, in 1865, Dr.
Phillips Brooks, rector of Holy
Trinity Church in Philadelphia,
was visiting the Holy Land. He saw
the little town of Bethlehem lying
far below him in the starlight, with
shepherds on the surrounding
fields. This scene, which he never
forgot, inspired him several years
later to write the Christmas carol,
O Little Town of Bethlehem. The
music was composed by the choir
director and organist, Lewis H.
Redner.
On Christmas morning, in 1868,
the carol was first sung by the
Sunday School children, for whom
the carol had been written.
Yearn to earn? Learn!
Cast not thy bread upon the
waters. It will only get soggy.
Outstanding
Performance
On December 9, 1984 the WCC
Symphony and the WCC Chorus
presented Handel’s “Messiah” in
the JAWCC with a large group
attending. Jerry Bangle was the
conductor with Grady Reagan as
the Choral Director. Jane Harris
was the concert accompaniest.
Those attending said it was an
excellent performance and they
were looking forward to the
“Messiah” again next December.
Talent does exist in the county!
Sharp Shopping
“I’m sorry,” stated the salesclerk
to the little girl, “I just don’t have
the time to show you any more
Christmas gifts that cost less than a
dollar.”
“How about a dollar and ten
cents?” asked the little girl.
“Think you’re going to get
something that much better for an
extra ten cents?”
“First let me see it,” she replied.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
May you ever have enough -
health . . . understanding . .
humility . . . success . . . work . .
love tears
laughter ... desire... fulfillment.
respect . . . liberty . .
responsibility . . . long life with
meaning... and with them will you
find a very merry and a happy
1985.
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Money Matters
Aunt Sophie gave a twenty-
dollar bill to her nephew for
Christmas. “Take good care of
that,” she said to him. “Don’t
spend it on foolishness. Remember
the old adage: A fool and his
money are soon parted. ”
“That’s great!” he said. “I can
make good use of the dough and
thanks for parting with it!”
Note Christmas
Places
Many places all over the world
have the word .Christmas in their
names. Among others, there are
the Christmas Islands in the
Pacific, named because Captain
Cook landed there on Christmas
Day, 1777. In Minnesota there
exists a Christmas Lake and there
are towns named Christmas in
Arizona, Florida, Kentucky,
Mississippi, and Tennessee.
