WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA
SEPTEMBER 2,1986
Welcome To W.C.C.
Journalism
Workshop
During the first week of August,
members ofthe 1986-87 WCC Year
book Staff attended a Jostens’ Year
book Workshop. The workshop
was held on the campus of the
University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill. Accompanied by their
advisor, the following members
attended; Tamara Triplett, editor;
Dana Michael and Robin Triplett, co
editors. They resided on the fourth
floor of East Grandville Towers.
The prupose of the workship
was to provide information for the
yearbook staff that would enable
them to produce a terrific yearbook
for their school. Representatives
from high schools and colleges all
over eastern North Carolina attend
ed. Each day, beginning at 9:00
a.m. and ending at 10:00; p.m., was
spent learning a variety of valuable
information. This included how to
make good layouts, how to write
exciting copy, headlines, how to
create interesting captions,
and how to creatively carry a theme
throughout the yearbook. There
were also special sessions held for
photographers to help them under
stand the basic elements of good photo
graphy.
Even though there was tremen
dous work to be completed, the
workshop also included fun times.
The staff attended an ice cream
party, toured the campus including
the new Dean Smith Activity Cen
ter, and took energizing walks up
and down Franklin Street, ventur
ing into all the souvenir shops.
The trip to Chapel Hill was help
ful and rewarding for the staff.
They returned to Wilkes with ex
citing ideas for the 1987 yearbook
and an eagerness to get the book
started and make it the best ever
here at Wilkes Community College.

The stage is a wooden platform,
the scenery a fragile cardboard
moon. There is a boy, a girl, their
fathers, and a wall. It seems to be
very little, but it is THE FANTA-
STICKS, the longest-running pro
duction in American theatrical his
tory.
Winner of the Vernon Rice
Award for “Outstanding Contri
bution to the Off-Broadway Thea
tre,” the musical has had over
2,000 productions in all fifty states,
six national touring companies in
this country plus an extended tour
of Army basis in the Pacific and in
Europe, and has been performed in
thirty-five countries.
The book and lyrics are by Tom
Jones and the Music by Harvey
Schmidt. After the FANTA-
STICKS, Jones and Schmidt went
on to write 110 IN THE SHADE, I
DO, I DO AND CELEBRATION.

I
Although you have been remind
ed repeatedly, and truthfully, that
this is an important and challenging
time in your life - it is also a time
for fun. A person’s college exper
ience should be enjoyable and con
tain the makings of fond and happy
memories and we want WCC
to be a part in providing this in
your lives. WCC is here to serve
you and to meet your educational
needs for your lifetime and we
want you to enjoy your studies
here and be a part of the college.
There are now fifteen active stu
dent clubs and organizations at
WCC whose interests are as varied
as the students. We have a school
yearbook, newspaper, and literary
magazine - all entirely staffed by
the student body. The student govern
ment association gives each of you
the opportunity to be an active
participant in the decisions of your
college. The college theatre, symp
hony and jazz ensemble provide
■you an opportunity to enjoy and
share your fine arts talents. Or if
your talents are athletic in nature,
our intramural activities cover every
thing from chess and table tennis
to softball and wresting. There are
many contests for your participa
tion and enjoyment from “All
Sports Day” to our famous “Gong
Show”, and we hope you will take
part.
We at WCC want you to enjoy
the time you spend learning here
and hope the memories you build
here will be fond ones. If there is
anything I can do to help you as
you study here, please feel free to
let me know. You are the reason I
am here and my door is always
open. Again, welcome to WCC!
