The team, known as the Cougars, will play their first game on Thursday, December 17, at 4:00 pm in the WCC gymna sium against Catawba Valley Com munity College. Five area community colleges are participating in the newly formed Western Athletic Community College Conference. They are Asheville-Bun- combe, Caldwell, Catawba Valley, Surry and Wilkes. Next year, the con ference will include two or three more community colleges to the conference. The coach at WCC, Jim Jones, is excited about the new program and says that it provides an opportunity for local students who might not qual ify for scholarships, but are good ath letes, to attend a colege that has an athletic program. It will benefit those who excel in athletics, but need to work on academics. After completing two years at WCC and working on academics, they could qualify for a scholarship to a four year college. WCC has planned a program for the year that includes tennis for men and women in the spring and co-ed volleyball in the fall. Definitely in the works for next year is a women’s bas ketball team. According to Coach Jones, WCC has a lot of excellent female athletes, but some of the other schools were unable to put a women’s team together this season. Assistant coach for the Cougars is WCC alumnus Ritchie Greer. Tom Caudill and Frank Shuford are score- keeping officials. The team’s roster includes Jody Cheek, 6'1'; David Derrick, 6'2"; Ernie Eller, 6'0'; Jerry Goodlow, 6'6'; William Harrison, 6'2'; Christian Hilliard, 6'1'; Scott Horton, 6'3'; Derrick Johnson, 6'0'; Ricky Joines, 6'3'; Tim Laws, 6'4'; Jason Macemore, 6'3", Jerry Myers, 6'1"; Joel Perkins, 5'11"; DavidTurn- mire, 6'1'; and Melvin Roberts, 5'8'. Coach Jones stated that the philo sophy at WCC is "to provide an intercollegiate atmosphere for com munity colleges on a localized level.” He said that the basketball program may attract students that otherwise wouldn’t have considered WCC. This season’s eight scheduled games and conference tournament are as follows: Phi Theta Kappa News PTK members have been as busy as little elves with the holiday season approaching soon. He spoke of the interdependence of all humanity, of the sacredness of life, of the power of love and of social change through nonviolence. His sermon has special significance today as the world faces the dawning of a new world order, as countries which were enemies during King’s day now become friends, and newly- divided countries rekindle old hat reds. As he so eloquently stated 25 years ago, "Now the judgement of God is upon us, and we must either learn to live together as brothers, or we’re all going to perish together as fools.y CHRISTMAS DANCE December 17 9:00 P.M. - Midnight in the GED Testing Eligibility for testing — Any person who is not a high school graduate may apply for the cer tificate and take the tests if he/she is eighteen (18) years of age or older.
