THE VOICE OF WILKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE VOLUME 25, NUMBER 6 WILKESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA MAY 19,1995 Thirtieth Anniversary ofWCC For all our hopes and dreams we have chosen Wilkes Community College as a starting point. tt Going back in time to 1965, you see a world where hair was worn in what is commonly known as a beehive, leather and polyester were in, cat glasses and mini-skirts were hip, and the word "Groovy” was tossed around the same way "Cool” is today. It was a different world, a different time. The Beatles were in their second best year with the Supremes and the Temptations coming in close behind. Not many people realize it, but 1995 is the 30th anniversary of Wilkes Com munity College. Wilkes has come a long way in thirty years. For example, when WCC was first a certified college, the few classes were held in such places as the Woodland School building. Old Wilkes Elementary School, and church base ments. In that first year only four people were involved in the teaching. Bill Richardson, the Vice President of plan ning and development. Dr. Howard Thompon, the President and founder of the school, Helen Potts, Secretary to the President, and one teacher, Lois Beale, a nursing instructor. The college’s Com mons was a basement in an old house in Happy 30th Anniversary! To Wilkes Community College: You've come a long way, Baby! -By: Jesse Turner Wilkesboro. The house was burned to the ground a few years ago. Sad?l*erhaps. The passing of time and the destruction of palces that hold so many memories, good, bad, or indif ferent, are always sad affairs. But then you stop, look around and see how much has been attained. Since 1995, much has happened to the school. In 1966, the college theater was formed and students admitted to a full time status in Associate in Arts and Associate in Science programs. In 1965, there were a full ten graduates, and the "Cougar Cry” was founded. In 1968, the first yearbook was pubhshed. Dur ing 1971 accreditation was given by the N.C. State Board of Education, and in 1972, two hundred students graduated. In 1977 Dr. David E. Daniels assumed the honor of President. In 1989, Dr. James R. Randoph became the third President, and in 1991, WCC acquired an additional 22 acres of land bringing the size of Wilkes Community College to 111.95 acres. 2 First President Dr. Howard Thompson First Secretary Mrs. Helen Potts n|« ^ • 111 First Faculty and staff: Dr. Faye Byrd, Dr. Frances ].
