Reflections on Summer Vacation
Well, folks, summer vacation is over. For some of us, that means no
more lazy days at the lake or staying up to all hours of the night. To the
less fortunate ones who had a job or kids to take care of this summer, it
just means having to balance school into their already hectic schedules.
No matter what kind of schedule you had this summer, we will all be
doing the same thing on Tuesday, August 29. Registering! Yes, that's
right, unless you were smart enough or able to make it here for early
registration August 1 -4, you will probably wonder why the line you're
standing in seems so long while summer vacation seemed so short. Oh
well, 1 guess that's just the way it goes. At the end of May, you feel as
though you have this entire summer to do everything you've been
daydreaming about in class, but then, before you know it, it's August 31,
and you're back in the classroom tliinking about all the things you didn't
get done. Oh well, there's always next summer to look forward to. Until
then, enjoy yourself and don't daydream too much (especially when you're
suppo.sed to be studying).

Things To Do If You See
Someone Lonely At College
1. Make conversation and introduce yourself.
2. Find out where they came from,
3. Also, talk of common interests.
4. Keep in mind others you know that you could
send to relate, such as athletics or such.
Many times we find ourselves in a new environment, unsure of our
surroundings and the people in these surroundings. So it is easy to shut
others off and become lonely. If one finds another lonely, conummication
should be the first key. Try to find things tliat this lonely person might
enjoy. If you should not have anything in common with this person, refer
them to another person so that they make new friends. At other times,
outgoing people may find themselves lonely and it is up to their peers to
make them feel better. Sometimes loneliness is a hard element to spot in
people, but how hard is it to talk to someone tliat looks lonely? On top of
making someone feel better, you have met a new person that you would
not have known otherwise. Face it, everyone is somebody that gets lonely
from time to time; if we as a whole take care of each other's loneliness it
shows that we are a community of people who care. I guess that shows
tlu-ough in our name - Wilkes Community College.
The Vacations Of The Fourth
Students that attended summer courses at WCC received a vacation for
the Fourth of July holiday. The vacation lasted from the third of July until
the seventh. Several students were caught on campus after the hohday break
and asked of their activities. The responses of the students varied from
watching fireworks to playing bingo to just plain nothing. Homework and
studies did find tlieir way into some of the students' activities, however.
Student Kevin Calloway stated, "My girlfi'iend. Gala, and I went to the
beach. On the fourth we went to Mountain Park and watched the fire
works." Spending time with loved ones seemed to be a top priority with
those vacationing. Wes Martin said that he watched the fireworks on top of
the Ole Wilkes Plantation Restaurant with his fiancee and his colleagues.
He also said that he studied for a test for Dr. Hendrix. One married couple.
Missy and William Byers, could not spend their holiday with each other:
Missy stayed at home and watched fireworks while William traveled to
Chicago and played with the "lot lizards." Missy spent her vacation mainly
playing bingo with her friend, Tina Williams. Students were not the only
ones wlio got to vacation, though. Teachers also got the time off. Mr. Phys
ical Education, WesScroggs, spent his Fourth of July holiday "laid up in the
bed." Scroggs had a shoulder injury that prevented him from participating
in the festivities of the holiday.
The break in classes was a much needed lift for those that attended the
summer courses. This vacation allowed the students and the teachers to re
cuperate from the first part of the summer, and be fully rested for the final
weeks to come.
