Bloodmobile
Held At WCC
Phi Theta Kappa sponsored a Blood-
mobile for the American Red Cross
on Wednesday, September 27 from
10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The Red Cross
goal of sixty-five pints of blood was
missed by a narrow margin, with the
Bloodmobile receiving fifty-nine
pints. Another Bloodmobile is plan
ned for May of 1996, so all WCC
donors are encouraged to participate.
Thanks
Phi Theta Kappa would like to
thank the Wilkes Community College
Book Store for donating a college T-
shirt. the shirt was a prize in a drawing
held at the Carolina’s Regional Phi
Theta Kappa Fall Leadership Con
ference and was much appreciated.
Operation
Christmas
Child
Phi Theta Kappa is planning to
participate in the Operation Christ
mas Child campaign sponsored by the
Samaritan’s Purse ministries from
Boone, NC. Operation Christmas
Child is an annual program which
sends shoe boxes filled with Christ
mas gifts to children in war-torn coun
tries. This year, the Samaritan’s Purse
is sending thousands of shoe boxes to
children in Bosnia. Each box will be
filled with necessary hygienic items as
well as school supplies, candy, and
Christmas toys. All students are in
vited to participate by choosing a card
from a Christmas tree which will be
set up in the Thompson Hall Com
mons area or by donating money.
Please help Phi Theta Kappa give
unfortunate Bosnian children a bright
spot in what is probably going to be an
otherwise depressing Christmas. Phi
Theta Kappa would like to thank any
member of the student body, faculty,
or staff who decides to participate in
this program.
Apple Festival
The Brushy Mountain Apple Fes
tival will be held in North Wilkesboro
on Saturday, October 7, 1995. High
lights of the Apple Festival always
include hand-made crafts, fresh pro
duce, various exhibits, live music, and
lots of festival food. Wilkes Com
munity College will once again be rep
resented at the Apple Festival. Stu
dent Development, along with the Phi
Theta Kappa Honor Society, will pro
vide an information booth.
What Do
Students Look
For In Teachers
You hear the talk every quarter, just
before registration. Who did you take
that course from, and did you like the
teacher? Answers and reasons vary, so
you never know what kind of in
structor you have until YOU are in
the class. What kind would you like?
A quick poll of students netted these
varied answers:
"A teacher who’s easy to get along
with and has lots of office hours.”
"One who makes the class chal
lenging.”
"One who has a clear and concise
way of explaining the subject.”
"One with personality, and a good
sense of humor.”
"A teacher who has control of the
class.”
"An expert in their field.”
"A teacher who cares about the
students.”
The list is so long. I’m surprised
there is no mention of a Halo. Won
der what teachers look for in students?

Trick'orTreat
Trends
Halloween is just around the corner
and that means everyone has an excuse
to get into a disguise so that they can
go stir up some mischief or at least get
some candy. Walk into any Wal-mart
and you will see aisles filled with all
sorts of goodies to transform your
everyday self into a fully-costumed
trick-or-treater. The more traditional
costumes for Halloween are witches,
ghosts, and ghouls, but this year’s
costumes range anywhere from Dis
ney’s Pocohontas to the ever-popular
Power Rangers. If you’re having a
hard time trying to figure out what
you want to dress like this year, take a
look at these people’s favorite cos
tumes and maybe you’ll get an idea.
Melinda Foster and Jody Grose like
to dress up like vampires. Adrian
Perez likes to paint his face white and
dress all in black. Mindy Hudson’s
favorite costume was that of a 60’s girl
and Kevin Gentry’s favorite was a
mummy. There must be something
about dressing up like animals that
people like because several folks have
masqueraded as four-legged creatures.
Jamie Chapman’s favorite costume
was a fluffy white dog, Wiliam Head
has dressed like Snoopy, Dina
Ormond enjoys dressing up like a
black cat, and Mark Royal likes
painting his face up like a cat. Becky
Vickers has decided to be the Grim
Reaper this year, so don’t be too
alarmed if this specter comes knockin’
on your door.
I hope everyone has a Happy Hallo
ween - just beware of what lurks in the
shadows!!
