Thanksgiving
Memories
Thanksgiving is just around the
corner. To many, the thought of
Thanksgiving brings to mind visions of
plump, juicey turkeys and endless
helpings of pumpkin pie - already many
mouths have begun to water in
anticipation of Thanksgiving Day. I
envision Thanksgiving as a cloudy, cozy
kind of day. There's a chill in the air
and the fallen leaves crackle and crunch
beneath my feet as I go up the walk to
Grandma's house. Once inside, I'm
constantly enveloped in the warmth
that the presence of family members
seems to exude. The adults seated at
the large dining table discuss news
events and what's happened in each
other's lives since the last time they
gathered, while the children seated on
stools at the kitchen counter talk of
more important things, such as what to
put on their Christmas wish lists. The
smell of good home cookin' fills the
house, as does the chatter and laughter
of those within its walls. When at last,
the food is ready to be served, thanks is
given not only for the delicious feast
placed before us, but also for our
health, the roof over our heads, and
most of all - each other.
With Thanksgiving approaching, I
decided to ask a few people what comes
to mind when they think about
Thanksgiving. Here are some of their
answers:
Maria Barelski remembers going to
her church in Memphis and having a
potluck Thanksgiving dinner. Alida
Cardo says that making a turkey for the
first time when her aunt from Cuba
came to visit stands out in her memory.
Christy Blevins remembers taking
walks through the woods with her
family on Thanksgiving Day. Becky
Coe recognizes Thanksgiving as the
first holiday when her whole family gets
together. Susan Jones and Lisa Absher
think of Thanksgiving as a time when
their entire families gather together to
eat Thanksgiving dinner. To Pam
Trivette, Thanksgiving brings to mind a
time when family and friends are all
happy. Christine Boult associates
Thaksgiving with turkey. Crystal
Barber thinks of food and cold weather
when thinking of Thanksgiving and
Neil Dowell thinks of playing football
and seeing family.
It seems that most people associate
Thanksgiving with food and family -
not too bad a combination. Whatever
your plans are for this Thanksgiving,
please remember those who are less
fortunate than you and take the time to
give thanks for everything that's going
right in your life.

Rocktober --
Incredible!
Over a hundred students worked
together to bring the first Rock Concert
to WCC. Started by Ye Host and SGA,
soon almost all the various student
organizations were involved in the
event Finally, on Friday, October 20th
at 5:00 p.m., as the gates opened, the
first chords could be heard. Volunteers
from various clubs were settled into
their work zoiws. Waves were exchanged
. . . the beats increased; this was going
to be something! People started coming
in, eager to find a front spot to place
their chairs. Soul Food started the
evening - and the crowd was hooked.
Mother Nature followed, with a
different sound continuing to captivate
the crowd. About that time, the REAL
Mother Nature decided to play her
tune. It was impressive, should the
animals he herded up in pairs and does
anyone know what a cubit is? The band
played on. When the rain didn't stop,
the crowd dwindled. Those who stayed
were rewarded by the performance of
Split Decision. It had become miserable
weather but the public, staff, students
and volunteers who were there had all
been treated to a memorable night of
great music and comaraderie. No matter
what, wc were all in it together.
INCREDIBLE ... it was great! Many
Thanks CHRIS CHEAP, can't wait for
the Second Annual Rocktober - it'll be
even better!

A Shoebox
Christmas
Alpha Kappa Omega's Operation
Christmas Child campaign is running
smoothly. The campus has responded
postively, and Alpha Kappa Omega has
received many of the items needed for
the shoe boxes. These boxes will be
filled on Monday, November 20.
Anyone wishing to help fill shoe boxes
should report to Dr. Hendrix's office in
room 405 at 9 a.m. that morning. The
boxes are due to be shipped to
Harrisburg, NC by Monday. December
4th.
Alpha Kappa Omega would like to
offer a special thanks to everyone who
has helped put Operation Christmas
Child together. Phi Theta Kappa
members, as well as Wilkes Community
College (acuity, staff, and students, have
donated time, money, and supplies to
make this campaign a success. Several
businesses in and around Wikes County
have also been very generous. Alpha
Kappa Omega really appreciates all the
effort everyone has put into Operation
Christmas Child.
Parking
The Fall Quarter of 1995 started out
well and adventurous for many Wilkes
Community College students. There
were new feces, and new acquaintances
to be made, as well as old returning
friends returning to schooL A new year
of activities and clubs has proven to be
adventurous and enjoyable to everyone.
Everything seemed perfect except for
one mitK>r thing, the parking. It seemed
that there were a larger number of
students this quarter than in the past
This in itself was great for Wilkes
Community College, but it proved
havoc for the parking spaces. Finding a
parking space was difficult, especially if
you were running behind or had a late
morning class. However, as the quarter
progressed, the parking seemed to
improve tremendously. Routine seemed
to be the thing that helped the most,
because people become more
accustomed with coming back to school
and getting a method started. With
routine on our side, the ease of finding
a parking space is much beter for Wilkes
Community College students.

Fall Fountains of Youth
Patchwork mountains yearly beckon
Golden yellow, red and brown leaves rustle
gently in the wind, bringing scents of strong
clean cedar. And memories of fresh laid quilts
on cold beds, and hot spiced cider
sipped on frosty afternoons. I am a child again,
hungry for Thanksgiving, and
curious for Christmas.
