Phi Theta Kappa Update.
By Louise Baldock
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor
society which stresses “scholarship first.”
The Wilkes Community College local chap
ter is Alpha Kappa Omega, and it is in full
swing for the 1^7-98 school year. Officers
for this school year are Joanna Barelski, pres
ident; BinitaThakkar, vice-president; Louise
Baldock, secretary; Renee Griffin and David
Calhoun, co-treasurers; Jose Hernandez and
Denee Barrett, co-editors of newsletter.
In June, we held a fundraiser and donated the
profit of $385.00 to two non-Phi Theta
Kappa volunteers for Merle Fest. These vol
unteers were injured in an auto accident on
their way to the festival last April.
In July, a committee made an impressive dis
play of Phi Theta Kappa information for the
display case in the Wilkes Community
College Library. Committee members were
David Calhoun, Renee GrifTin, Amber
Glasco and Joanna Barelski. This informa
tion was on display from July through
September for the student body to view.
Members Denee Barrett and Jeff Lovette
helped the WCC Marketing Committee with
collecting marketing surveys from students
in freshman registration lines this fall. We
hope this information will be valuable in
helping our school provide for student needs.
The Phi Theta Kappa College Project for
1997-1998 provides free college work study
or tutoring by Alpha Kappa Omega mem
bers. We have at least 10 members partici
pating. We have two members assisting busi
ness faculty while most members are helping
instructors in the Skills Lab in the Learning
Center.
Mr. Barry Hooker with the American Red
Cross worked with Alpha Kappa Omega
members sponsoring the blood drive on
September 17,1997. We reached 93% of our
goal this year and had 11 first time donors.
Alpha Kappa Omega welcomes Dr Karen
Staten as a co-advisor for our Society. Dr
Staten is from the Chicago area and worked
at College of DuPage. She brings experience
and enthusiasm that will be an asset to our
society. Her daughter, Rachel Gorshe, will
be a member and an asset to Alpha Omega.
Our members will be competing on regional
and international levels in the four hallmarks
of scholarship, leadership, fellowship and
service. The hallmark chairpersons for this
year are Rachel Gorshe, scholarship; Louise
Baldock, fellowship; Joanna Barelski, lead
ership; and Cindy McQueen, service.
A regional leadership conference was held in
Florence, SC, on September 12-14. Our
chapter sent 8 members and 2 advisors.
Exercises in teamwork helped members
understand the process and documentation
required for the hallmark competition. Our
members won several awards and prizes.
