also worked as a graduate assistant/lab
instructor at Appalachian State University.
She and her husband, Steve, live in
Wilkesboro and have three-year-old twins,
Trevor and Trent.

Vanya Green
Karen Staten has come to WCC from
Naperville, Illinois, lead instructor of
Communications. She previously worked as
an English and communications instructor at
Karen Staten
the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Illinois
and at Joliet Junior College in Joliet, Illinois.
She also has experience teaching at both the
elementary and high school levels. At WCC,
she will also serve as advisor to Phi Theta
Kappa.
Ms. Staten received her Ed.D. degree in
developmental education from California
Coast University in Santa Ana, Califomia.
She earned a Master of Science degree from
the University of Dayton, Ohio, in teaching
speech in secondary education and a
Bachelor of Arts degree from Union Institute
in Cincinnati, Ohio, in communication. Ms.
Staten has a son, Nathan, who attends school
in the Chicago area and a daughter, Rachel,
who has moved with her to North
Wilkesboro and is a student at WCC.
Joyce Minton is the new lead instructor in the
Medical Assisting Program. She is a 1987
graduate of the Wilkes Community College
Medical Assisting Program and received her
credential as a Certified Medical Assistant in

1991 with re-certification in 1996. Prior to
coming to work at Wilkes, Mrs. Minton was
employed at Wilkes Regional Medical
Center as Office Manager in the Rehab
Services Department. She also has previous
experience working with Wilkes Family
Health Center in North Wilkesboro as a med
ical assistant. Joyce and her husband, Danny,
have two children and live in the Champion
community of Wilkesboro.

Tim Lackey
Architectural Technology instructor. Prior to
coming to the college, he was an Industrial
Technology teacher at Wilkes Central High
School for 12 years and at Mooresville City
School for one year. While at Wilkes Central
he also served as head baseball coach. A
Wilkes County native, Mr. Lackey graduated
from North Wilkes High School and received
his Associate in Arts degree from Wilkes
Community College. He earned his
Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial
Technology and Education from
Appalachian State University. Tim lives in
Wilkesboro with his wife, Melissa, and
daughter, Courtney.
Ralph Joines of Brushy Mountain Road,
Moravian Falls, has been employed as a
grounds technician. Mr. Joines has experi
ence in heavy equipment operation;, lawn,
tree and garden maintenance, landscape
design; masonry and carpentry; installation
of drainage systems and large truck opera
tion. Prior to coming to work at WCC, Mr.
Joines was employed as a heavy equipment
operator for Northwestern Construction
Company in Wilkesboro. (Picture

Brenda Padgett has been employed as a cus
todian. Prior to coming to WCC she was
employed with First Choice Maintenance
Service in Millers Creek. Ms. Padgett is a

graduate of Ben L. Smith High School in
Greensboro, N.C. She and her husband,
Donald, live in North Wilkesboro. They
have two sons, Daniel and Spencer, and two
grandchildren, Lauren and Noal, all of whom
reside in Wilkes County.
Dean Johnson has been employed by WCC
as a custodian. Mr. Johnson is a Wilkes
County Native and attended North Wilkes
High School. Prior to coming to work at
Wilkes he was employed by Lowe’s
Companies Warehouse in North Wilkesboro
as an order selector. He and his wife have
one son and live in North Wilkesboro.
