David Elliott is also from Cleveland County where he was teammates with Mike and played football, base
ball and American Legion baseball for Shelby. David is 6’1” and weighs in at 210 lbs. David is a strong
baseball player, has good hands and a cannon for an arm. He also hits the ball with power. David is in the
Building Construction program. David will be an all- around-player: he will be catching, playing 3'"^ base
and pitching. Look for good things from David Elliott.
Carlton Hire is from West Forsyth High School where he played football and baseball. Carlton played at
Guilford College last season where he played varsity football and baseball. He hurt his arm in football and it
still gives him trouble. Carlton also played American Legion baseball for Mocksville -Davie, where he was
the starting catcher. Carlton is always the last to leave practice because he is either taking extra cuts in the
cage or he is running wind sprints. He has a lot of power at the plate and is a good receiver behind the plate.
Carlton is in the Autobody Repair program at the college and has over a 3.2 GPA. Watch out for Carlton
Hire.
Eric Lawing is from Concord High School and was a stand-out at his school in basketball and baseball. Eric
stands 6’ 1 ”, and weighs 160 lbs. Eric played 3 years for American Legion Post 51 at Concord NC. Eric is in
the AA program and plans to attend a four year school after graduation. Eric is a good and smart pitcher who
knows where to place the ball, and he also plays the infield very well. We are pleased to have Eric here;
however he will be red shirted this season. His duty will be to help his fellow pitcher and we know he will
do this well. We are looking forward to his being back with the team next fall.
Kelly Poplin, better known as “POP” Kelly, is from Charlotte. He went to Independence High School, where
he wrestled and played baseball. He played for the American Legion baseball team in Charlotte. Kelly is a
hard working player. His work habits are far above most ball players. He works hard in the weight room
where he helps other players to do their workouts. Kelly stands 5’10” and weighs 185 lbs. And has the pure
desire to play the game. Kelly plays the outfield and is very quick and has a cannon for an arm. Kelly will
also be red shirted this spring, but he will help the team in the weight room and work with the hitters. Kelly
showed a lot of determination when he came back to school. It’s easy to quit, but quit is not one of Kelly
Poplin’s words.
Geoff Stanford is a graduate of North Mecklenberg in Charlotte, where he was a stand-out player. He also
played Legion baseball in Charlotte. Geoff stands 6’0” and weighs 160 lbs. and has a cannon for an arm. He
is a super 3^^ baseman and hits the ball hard as a line drive hitter. Geoff is in the AA program. However, he,
too, is red shirted for this season.
Bradley Hayes is a graduate of East Wilkes High School where he excelled in football, basketball and base
ball. He also played American Legion baseball for Post 31. He will be pitching, catching and playing some
at third base. Bradley will do a super job for the team and we are so glad he chose to come to WCC.
