Cougar Cry
WCC's Baseball Team Profile
By Coach Kerry Nichols
Clint Johnson, second year player from North Wilkes Higfi School, is a solid defensive second baseman.
Clint brings to this team a .333 batting average from last year. He will also see duty on the mound where he
excelled this past season for Post 31. Clint is 5’8” and weighs 135 lbs. but his heart is much bigger. Clint
is in the Building Construction Technology program.
Scott Nelson, in his second year at WCC, is returning to his true form.. Scott played baseball at Central Da
vidson High School and also for Lexington Post 8 American Legion, where he was primarily used as a
pitcher. Scott is 6’0” and weights 195 lbs.. He works real hard and he gives everything he has each time
he takes the mound. Scott had 42 strike outs last season and a ERA of 4.68, not too bad for a college fresh
man. Scott is in the Associate Arts program.
Sam Hedrick, roommate to Scott, is in his second year for WCC. Sam played baseball also for Central Da--
vidson High School, plus for Lexington Post 8 American Legion where he played 1^' base and D/H. Sam
hurt his arm in high school and was primarily used at D/H last season. In this slot he hit .335 with 15 runs
batted in. Sam is 6’2” and weighs in at 220 lbs.. Sam is a hard worker and does anything he is asked to do.
He is in the Building Construction Technology program.
Shawn Yambor, his teammates call him Yam, is also in his second year as a Cougar. Shawn is formerly from
Florida but moved to NC several years ago and graduated from Fred T. Ford High School, where he excelled
at baseball and the books. Shawn is 6’1 ” and weighs in a solid 1901bs.. He works hard and is always will
ing to do what ever it takes to be successful. This past fall he was awarded the Distinguished Academic All-
American from Dr. Bums, the president of WCC. Shawn sets an example for the rest of the team with his
hard work on the field and most importantly in the classroom. Shawn is in the Criminal Justice program and
plans to attend Mars Hill next year and also play baseball there. Shawn will pitch, play third base, or any
where else we may need him.
Bryan McDevitt, better know as McNugget, is one of the most hard working , scrappy, positive baseball
players on the team. Bryan played baseball for Alexander Central High School and the Taylorsville Ameri
can Legion team. He is a solid 5’8” and 145 lbs. and desires to be the best he can be. Bryan is in the Crimi
nal Justice program where he has a 3.2 GPA. Last season Bryan did very well for us with 2 game-winning
hits. He played the outfield and 2"^ base and hit .325, with several stolen bases. With Bryan’s attitude and
the desire to play the game, it’s no wonder their fellow teammates selected him along with Shawn Yambor
as TEAM CAPTAIN.
Colt Ballard, a gifted player, is looking really good. Colt graduated from Statesville High School where he
played SS and pitched. He also played for the Statesville Legion team. Colt is 5’8” and 145 lbs., but his size
isn’t important, it’s how big his heart is. Colt is in the Associate in Arts program and his desire is to go on
and play at a four year school. The coaches here at WCC are pleased Colt chose our school for his education
and his baseball. Look for good things from #2 Colt Ballard.
Michael Mackey is another one of the Statesville boys, and a teammate and roommate to Colt Ballard.
Michael played at Statesville High School and the Statesville Legion also. Michael is known as MacDog,
and the name fits. When he takes the mound that’s what he is. He gives everything he has and doesn’t hold
anything back. Michael will be used mostly as a pitcher, but he is a really good outfielder, and he is work
ing out at 2"** base. We know no matter where we put him, he will be a benefit to the team. Michael is'
5'1 l."and 165 lbs., and is in the Associate in Arts program.
