James Blackburn will be serving as a Club Representative and is a graduate of West Wilkes High School. He is enrolled in the
Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology program and is vice-president of the Diesel Club. He is a member of Calvary Baptist
Church and is the son of Ford and Ann Blackburn of North Wilkesboro.
Chad Hayes will be serving as a Sophomore Representative and is a graduate of East Wilkes High School. He is enrolled in the
Business Administration program and employed at Cheek’s Market. He was a member of this year’s volleyball and basketball teams
and also served as SGA secretary for the current academic year. He is the son of Tony and Brenda Hayes of North Wilkesboro.
Patricia Jeffries will be serving as a Club Representative and is a graduate of the Adult High School program at WCC. She is en
rolled in the Associate in Science - Computer Science program and is also a member of the school newspaper staff She is the
daughter of Ron and Patty Jeffries of Elkin.
Jennifer Kiger will be serving as a Sophomore Representative and is a graduate of Bedord High School in Massachusetts. She is
enrolled in the Associate in Arts program and is the daughter of Jim and Sharon Kiger of Wilkesboro.
Brandon Marley will be serving as a Club Representative and is a graduate of Wilkes Central High School. He is enrolled in the
Associate in Arts program and is also a member of the school newspaper staff He works part-time at Winn Dixie and is a member
of Davis Memorial Baptist Church. He is the son of Mack and Becky Marley of Wilkesboro.
Steven Norris will be serving as a Club Representative and is a graduate of Watauga High School. He is enrolled in the Heavy
Equipment and Transport Technology program and is treasurer of the Diesel Club. He is a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church
and is the son of Doug and Gladys Norris of Boone.
Neil Townsend will be serving as a Sophomore Representative and is a graduate of East Wilkes High School. He is enrolled in the
Architectural Technology program and was a member of this year’s volleyball team. He works part-time at the Coca-Cola Bottling
Company and is the son of Bill Townsend of Ronda and Laura Wright of Shelby.
Jason Carter will be serving as a Sophomore Representative and is a graduate of East Wilkes High School. He is enrolled in the
Associate of Science program and is employed part-time at First Union. He is the son of Mark and Kim Carter.

is a compliment to everyone at Wilkes that our SGA re
ceived this award. Our students are energetic and enthusias
tic about seeing that WCC is an interesting place to learn
and that our community is an exciting place to live. The
“Top Campus” award exemplifies their success in achiev
ing this goal.”
At the conference, the students attended a variety of work
shops and committee meetings, enabling them to interact
with students from other community colleges from across
the state and gain new ideas for the SGA at WCC.
The Student Government Association is the official repre
sentative of the student body. Officers are elected each year
and work with the students in organizing a variety of activi
ties throughout the year. The SGA president serves on the
college’s Board of Trustees and participates in the review
of policies and procedures that will affect student life.

Honors Program to Begin at WCC
Wilkes Community College will be offering Honor
Classes and an Honors Program beginning fall of
1998. The program will consist of eighteen hours
of course work in a minimum of three disciplines
for the associate degree. Honor students will attend
a special honor lecture each semester in addition to
contributing eight hours of service to the college
each semester.
Returning students must have the following:
Completion of 12 hours
2. Completion of ENG 111
3. A cumulative GPA of 3.5
4. Faculty recommendation
