Cougar Cr> Page 6 WCC Announces 1997-98 Recipients of Gertrude Elliott Scholarship Wilkes Comiiuinity College announced that the 1997-98 recipients of the Gertrude EHiott Allied Health Scholarship are Amanda Lowe Jolly and Jennifer Michclle Reedy. I'iie Gertrude Elliott Scholarsiiip was established in memory of the late I-Jliott to provide financial assistance to Wilkes Community College students in the Health Services programs who are planning careers in nursing and re lated health care services. The candidates must have completed one year in their program and are selected on the basis of academic potential, high moral standards, good character,,and need for financial assistance. Each recipient is awarded $2,500 toward their college costs. Ms. Reedy is a 1994 graduate of Ashe Central High School and is a second- year student in the WCC Registered Nursing program. Upon graduation, she plans to work as a registered nurse in one of the area hospitals. Upon notifi cation of the scholarship award, Reedy stated, “It is an honor to be selected for this scholarship. 1 could not have attained my degree in nursing without the assistance this scholarship will afford me. 1 am very grateful.” Reedy and her daughter .Iordan live in Grassy Creek, NC. Amanda Lowe .lolly graduated from North Wilkes High School in 1994. Upon completion of her degree, she plans to continue her education to re ceive a Bachelor’s Degree and work as a Registered Nurse with the local school system. Regarding the receipt of this scholarship, l^fs. Jolly stated, “To be a nurse has been a lifelong goal for me. This scholarship will enable me to attain that goal and make a better future for my family.’V Jolly and her husband Michael live in the Mulberry community and have one daughter, Kara. Gertrude Webster Elliott was well known as an exceptional nurse in the emergency room of Wilkes Regional Medical Center.| After graduating from the Davis Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 she \|as employed at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She retyrned to her hometown of Wilkesboro and worked for Dr. Thomas McNeil|for many years while working part-time in the emergency room at Wilke? Regional. Following Dr. McNeil's death in 1974, Mrs. Elliott joined the hospital’s emergency room staff full-time and remained in this position until her death in 1988. The Gertrude E'lliott Scholarship was established by Dr. Tom Bowman, a member of the WCC Endowment Corporation Board of Directors and per sonal friend of Mrs. Filliott’s. In announcing this year’s recipients. Dr. Bow man stated, “Gertrude Elliott exemplified the dedication and commitment in dicative of her profession. She would be proud that these deserving and hard-working students have been helped through this scholarship in her name." Dr. Karolen Bowman, a member of the WCC Board of Trustees, was present to congratulate the students upon receipt of their scholarship checks.
