Cougar Cry Page 18 WCC Students Join Efforts with Habitat for Humanity Submitted By Sandy Sheets Landscaping makes a house a home and that is exactly what the students in Wilkes Community College’s Horticulture Technology program have shown. Under the direction of horticulture instructor Ronald Dollyhite and Ellen Lipscomb, Director for Habitat for Humanity, six WCC students installed plants and shubbery at the newly completed house built by Habitat for Humanity. The landscaping and design plants were selected by the college Landscape Techniques class. Students who participated in installing the landscaping included Heather Anderson, Casey Clodfelter, Betty Greene, Amber Pack, Renee Pruitt, and Mark Vannoy. All plants for the proj ect were donated by Country Ridge Nursery in Roaring River, NC. The Horticulture Technology curriculum at WCC is designed to prepare individuals for various careers in horticulture. Classroom instruction and practical laboratory applications of horticulture principles and practices are included in the program of study. Course work includes plant science, plant materials, propagation, soils, fertilizers, and pest management. Also in cluded are courses in plant production, landscaping, and the management and operation of horti culture businesses. Graduates qualify for employment opportunities in nurseries, garden centers, greenhouses, landscape operations, gardens and governmental agencies.
