Dr. Burns presented Angela Nerstheimer, with the Outstanding Lead- Instructor Arlene Handy nominated sophomore James Lentz for the ership Award at the end of the fall semester. Outstanding Leadership Award. Fall Semester Outstanding Student Leadership Awards Presented On Wednesday, December 9 Wilkes Community College recognized two students, James Lentz and Angela Nerstheimer, for their outstanding leadership during the fall semes ter. In order to be nominated for this award, students had to have a minimum G.P.A. of 3.0; be actively involved in at least one student organization; have planned/coordinated at least 1 activity/event for a student organization; and be planning to be enrolled at WCC during the 1999 spring semester. Nominations were accepted from both club advisors and athletics coaches and were then reviewed by an awards committee that selected James and Angela to be the recipients. James was nominated by Arlene Handy, Lead Instructor for Information Systems/ Programming and advisor for Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP). Janies is currently serving as president of AITP and is also a member of the Student Govern ment Association (SGA). During this school year, James organized many fundraisers for AITP, which helped make it possible for the group to attend an AITP conference. In addition to being a full-time student, James is also employed full-time with Domino’s Pizza. James is the son of Charlene Clayton and Bill Lentz. He and his wife, Jenny, have one son, Carson. In May James will be completing an associate’s degree in Information Systems with a concentration in Programming. After graduating he hopes to work as a programmer. When asked what he likes most about WCC, James stated, “WCC is one of the best values for the money. Being a community college the student to faculty ratio is low enough to allow more personal attention. WCC gave me the opportunity to get an education and work at the same time.” Angela was nominated by Joyce Minton, Lead Instructor for the Medical Assisting program and advisor for the Medical Assisting Club. Angela is president of the Medical Assisting Club and works at the Wilkes YMCA. She also teaches Spanish to the children enrolled at the WCC DayCare. On Angela’s nomination form, Joyce Minton wrote, “Angela takes the responsibilities of her office very seriously. She has led her fellow students in the participa- (Cominued on page 5)
