Page 16 Cougar Cty WCC COUGAR BASEBALL By Brandon Marley The pitcher looks in for the sign, he gets it, and here comes the pitch. The batter lools at the pitch hungrily as he takes a mighty swing at the ball. WHAM! There it goes back, back; back that ball is out of here. It’s that time of year again, when the boys of summer take over the lime light, it’s time for baseball season to start once again. The WCC Cougars are looking strong this year and they are out to win it all. Kerry Nichols will once again coach the team and assisted by Wes Scroggs. The Cougars will be participating in Region 10, Div.3 of the National Junior College Athletic Asso ciation. Here is your 1999 WCC Cougar Baseball Team: Bradley Goulds: A graduate of Wilkes Central, where he was also a member of the baseball team as well as spending time playing American Legion ball as well. Bradley will be seeing time as a relief pitcher this year. This will be Bradley’s first season with the Cougars. Bradley Hayes: A graduate of East Wilkes, is seeing his second tour of duty with the Cougar team. Bradley has also seen time in the Legion ball ranks as well. Bradley will be spending time on the mound throwing the heat as well as behind the plate catching. Josh Minton: Another returning player for the Cougar roster. A graduate of North Wilkes. Another veteran of American Legion ball, Josh will spend his time diving for balls out in left field. James Pierce: James graduated from North Wilkes and will be doing his duty in the outfield for the Cougars. This will be James’s first season with the Cougar team. Jon Welborn: A big boy and graduate from East Wilkes, is a showstopper at third base for the Cougars. This is Jon’s first season with the Cougars, Matthew Wood: Wood is another veteran of American Legion ball, and will be an all-around player playing outfield, second base, and also spending a little time on the mound for the Cougar team. Mark Martin: A graduate from White Oak High School in Jacksonville NC, Mar tin will be playing right field and will be the DH (Designated Hitter) for the team. Mark batted .395 last year 1 wouldn’t be su- prised to see lots of ball’s fiying over the fence by him. Eric Lawing: “Easy E” is a graduate from Concord High School. Eric will be spending time on the mound as well as shortstop. Kelly Poplin: A graduate from Independence High School in Charlotte, Kelly will be showing off his strong arm in the outfield for the Cougars. All runners beware of this guy. Michael Bumgardner: A graduate from Bums High School and a returning player, Michael is like a thief in the night for opposing pitchers. He just steals base after base. Michael swiped 36 bases last year, setting a school record. Ryan Desnoyers: A graduate from Davie High School, is a new player to the Cougar team. This season Ryan will be baffling hitters with his tremendous curve ball. Anson Brannon: A graduate from Starmount High School, is a new member of the team. Anson will be in the starting rotation. B.J. Locklear: A graduate of Glenn High School in Forsyth County, B.J. will be spending time on the mound this season.
