WCC, Carrie plans to enroll at Gardner Webb to complete a
bachelor’s degree in business administration. Carrie is a mem
ber of Baptist Home Church where she serves as both secre
tary for her Sunday School Class and as Campus Ministry
Chairperson. She is the daughter of Eric and Jill Rogers.
The other candidates for Mr. Cougar were Chad Treadway
and Michael Wingler.
Treadway was nominated by the student newspaper staff and
is the layout editor for this organization. After completing his
Associate in Arts degree at WCC, he plans to transfer to Ap
palachian State University. Treadway plans to become a high
school drafting instructor.
Wingler was nominated by the Association of Information
Technology Professionals and will complete his degree in In
formation Systems Technology with a concentration in pro
gramming this May. He is already employed full-time at WCC
as a network technician.
The other candidates for Ms. Cougar were Marleah Ferguson,
Scarlett Hayes, Donna Shumate and Tina Watkins.
Ms. Ferguson was nominated by the Rotaract Club and serves
as the president of this organization. She is also a member of
the SGA and is enrolled in the Associate in Arts program. She
is interested in pursuing a career as a lawyer.
Ms. Hayes was nominated by the Medical Assisting Club and
serves as the historian for this organization. She is enrolled in
the Medical Assisting degree program and plans to pursue a
career in the medical field.
Ms. Shumate was nominated by the V.O.I.C.E. (Volunteer
Outreach In Community Efforts) Club and serves as the vice-
president for this organization. She is enrolled in the Associate
in Science program and plans to transfer to Lenoir Rhyne. She
hopes to become a physician’s assistant.
Ms. Watkins was nominated by the Association of Information
Technology Professionals. She is enrolled in the information
systems technology - Programming concentration program
and after graduating she plans to pursue employment as a
computer programmer.

Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, with
a double major in physics and mathematics and a Master of
Science degree in Physics from North Dakota State Univer
sity in Fargo. Prior to coming to Wilkes, Gruver was a phys
ics lab instructor at Appalachian State University. He and his
wife, Wendy, live near Fleetwood.
Michael Souther has assumed the position of computer infor
mation systems instructor. A graduate of Appalachian State
University, he was employed at the college as network ad
ministrator prior to accepting the position in instruction.
Souther and his wife, Tracey, live in Union Grove.
Sherry Thompson began work on December 7, 1998 as a
welfare-to-work case manager at the Ashe Campus. She is a
Wilkes Community College graduate and received her
Bachelor of Social Work degree from Appalachian State
University. Prior to accepting this position, Mrs. Thompson
worked as a part-time instructor at the WCC Ashe Campus.
She is an active member of Trinity Baptist Church and Ashe
Baptist Association and serves on the advisory board for
Ashe County 4-H. She and her husband, Jim, have three chil
dren, Michael, 14; Matthew, 12; and Marcus, II. They live
in the Southport community in Ashe County.
Michael Wingler of Ferguson has accepted the position of
network/distance educator technician. He will receive Asso
ciate degrees in Information Systems Technology and Com
puter Programming from Wilkes Community College in the
Spring of 1999. Prior to employment at Wilkes, Wingler was
employed by United Parcel Services in Wilkesboro.
Rob Swaim began working at WCC in January as an archi
tectural/building instructor. He is a graduate of Wilkes Cen
tral High School and received Associates degrees in Archi
tectural and Building Construction Technology from Wilkes
Community College in 1998. He lives in the Boomer commu
nity.
Paula Wells joined WCC as a lead instructor in the college’s
child development center. Ms. Wells received her child care
credential I and II from Wilkes Community College, where
she has been employed part-time in the child development
center since 1995.
Cindy Killian of Taylorsville is the new Office Systems
Technology instructor for WCC. A graduate of Appalachian
State University with a Master of Science degree in Account
ing, she has worked as a staff accountant for Martin, Starnes
and Associates, PA in Taylorsville since 1996. She has also
worked as an adjunct accounting instructor for Lenoir-Rhyne
College in Hickory, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in
Accounting degree. She is also a state of North Carolina cer
tified public accountant. She and her husband, Brian, have
