Page 5 Cougar Cry Wilkes Community College Rotaract Club- From Wilkesboro to Africa Cntributed by Rotract Members The Wilkes Community College Rotaract Club geared up for a Walk-a-thon on March 6, 1999 to raise funds for an International Project. Members raised $843.00 in pledges. The club will be donating part of the proceeds to Amy Bailey, a former Wilkes County resident who is presently located in Coted’lvoire, Africa with the Peace Corps. This is the second year that the club has chosen to support Ms. Bailey’s efforts. Rotaract will also be awarding some of this money to two WCC nursing students who are going to Haiti in May on a mission trip. Those students are Jo Davis and Billie Miller. The Rotaract Club at Wilkes Community College has been active all year with various club and school sponsored events. The year was kicked off with a “Rotaract Roast” membership drive. Hot dogs were cooked on the front lawn for students and faculty willing to hear about Rotaract. Members assisted the parent club, North Wilkesboro Rotary, during the Wilkes County Agricul tural Fair. Other community service projects in the fall included; visiting and distributing candy to the Wilkes Senior Village residents during Halloween, sponsoring two housekeepers at WCC during “Housekeeper Appreciation Week,” collecting cloth ing for Ebenezer Children’s Home, cleaning Collegiate Drive for “Adopt a Highway,” and preparing 25 gift bags for Hospice families. Spring Semester finds Rotaract members continuing to provide service and socializing. Five members attended the 1999 Rotaract Carolinas’ Conference at the University of Greensboro on Saturday, January 30. They were: Marleah Ferguson, Club President, Teresa Ashlin, Club Service Director; Amanda Wescott, member; and Bud Rhodes and Belinda Smithey, Club Advisors. Ideas and information were exchanged between members of college and university Rotaract clubs along with presentations made by professionals including Dr. Patricia Sullivan, UNC-G Chancellor. During the Spring Semester, members are continuing to volunteer and arrange outings. Members are serving as ushers at John A. Walker Center events and are volunteering their services at MerleFest. Special projects such as dining etiquette and resume writing workshops are also in the works. Members are also attending North Wilkesboro Rotary Club meetings on Monday nights to broaden their understanding of the parent club and the business world. Toward the end of the semester, the club will award a scholarship to a local Interact member who plans to attend WCC in the fall. Interact is the high-school division of Rotary. WCC Rotaract is always looking for new members who are interested in meeting new friends, fundraising, providing community, school and international service and above all, having fun!
