Cougar Cry
Meet Michelle Gatlin,
Career Counseling Intern
By: Grade Wood
Michelle is a graduate student at Appalachian State University
and is from Murpheysborough, NC. When she was little she
wanted to be a marine biologist. She kinda grew out of that one.
Then, she wanted to be in printing technology. It was her first
major in undergrad, but when she started working in the field
she decided it was too lonely. She needed more people! That’s
when she decided to do career counseling. She was having so
much fun being a college student that she wanted to stay in col
lege forever. Since this was an impossibility, she settled with
working with college students instead. She loved the relaxed
atmosphere in the “college setting” as opposed to the deadline
riddled jobs of the corporate world. She loves the career coun
seling program mainly because of the students, but it also pro
vides opportunity for easy transfer into similar programs. She
especially enjoys helping women and the issues they deal with
on campus. Michelle enjoys helping the students achieve their
career goals. She wants to “challenge those who think they
might want to go into something nontraditional and help them
achieve that goal.” She says it is very rewarding to have a stu
dent update her on career/job opportunities that have worked
out for them (hint, hint).
Michelle started off in a junior college and made it on the Presi
dent’s list. Then she went to Appalachian where she freaked out
on the first day (so now you know you won’t be the first). She
recommends getting involved. It makes everything seem
smaller and less scary. Michelle came to Wilkes to do her in
ternship for her graduate program at ASU. She volunteered in
several career offices at ASU and has thoroughly enjoyed her
time at WCC. Michelle will be finished with her program in
May and would like to find a job somewhere in North Carolina.
Michelle has no pets, although, she would like to have a dog,
preferably a lab or golden retriever. No gifts though, her apart
ment at this time won’t allow her to have any “fuzzy luvvy’s.”
In her free time she loves doing outdoorsy things, of which there
are a lot in Boone. She doesn’t ski though. She tried that once
and prefers to be the one watching everyone “snowball” instead
of rolling down the hill herself She also enjoys movies of any
sort, although lately all she seems to have been doing in her free
time is look for a job on the net.
Well, Michelle’s personality could in no way be crammed into a
five minute interview, so take a few minutes to meet with her in
the Student Services Office.
