AniHta Review
Hello! I am Annie May. Allow me to be your guide to the wonderful world of Japanese
animation. Japanese animation, anime (say Annie-May) for short, known to many Ameri
cans as that Speed Racer stuff. Like movies, and comics, and novels, the
stories are as diverse as they are many: drama, comedy, action, adventure,
romance. When asked how it differs from American animation, the brief an
swer is that U.S. TV programs have clear-cut heroes and villains, they are
easy to categorize. Also, anime ranges from youth to adult. So if you're not sure about a
certain program check out the rating or warning then you'll know.
Japanese animation has two stereotypes; that of big eyes and different color hair. No race
has eyes as big as those sported by many anime and manga (comic) characters! Then why
—are their eyes so big? The credit, or blame, for this is given to Disney.
Mickey Mouse has big eyes so why not other characters. Also, one
, j! sees a riot of color: brown, black, blonde, blue.
pink, purple, green... Why? Well in manga the
J V artwork is almost always black and white. If
everyone had similar dark hair it would be hard
to distinguish different characters. So, they are often drawn with
light hair. Then when the manga is animated colors selected can be
quite interesting.
