A Student’s Perspective:
A Tribute to Coot Gilreath
By Melissa Ellis
Family and friends said goodbye to
Rev. Coot Gilreath on Friday, January 7.
The overwhelming expression of love and
the crowd that gathered to say goodbye at
Mr. Gilreath’s funeral was to say the least,
impressive. Family and friends filled the
church to pay their last respects. There
were so many people who came to pay their respects that
chairs had to be set up downstairs. I went because I had
known Mr. Gilreath for many years and wanted to say good
bye to someone who was such a wonderful person. He was
fair, concerned about his students, and helpful to them. He
was always a joy to be around.
I am sincerely thankful for the short time I got to
know him better. I thought the world of him and so did many
of the other students I have spoken with. Everyone was
shocked and saddened to hear of his sudden passing. He was
well liked and admired. It is hard to imagine that he is gone,
but we have so many wonderful memories of
him, memories that will keep us warm when
we become sad and wish he was still with us.
My heart goes out to the people who worked
with him everyday and got to know him as a
friend. Just think of the memories they have,
the times they shared, and the friendship they
have lost. There was and still is a lot of love and joy in the
Office of Student Services. They lost a dear friend, but
gained an Angel. Goodbye Mr. Gilreath and thank you for
everything.
