Cougar Cry Page 16 By: Wesley Pennell ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK: SCREAM 3 For some reason, soundtracks that are loaded with talented bands nearly always turn out to be a big disappointment. Unfortunately, this one is no exception. Like Spawn - The Album and End of Days, Scream 3 [Original Soundtrack] features an all-star lineup of talented bands, such as Godsmack, Coal Chamber, Sevendust, Powerman 5000, and Creed, as well as promising newcomers, such as Slipknot, Static-X, Full Devil Jacket, and Ear 2000. However, this also means that it is cluttered with subpar mate rial, B-sides, rarities, leftovers, and other songs that just don’t measure up to those found on the albums of the individual artists. “What If,” which is quite simply Creed’s worst song starts the album off on the wrong foot, and it never really gets back on track. Song after song, I found myself waiting for it to “rock,” and it never really does. Some of the tracks, like those from Ear 2000 and Static-X are simply awful. While others, such as those from Godsmack and Powerman 5000, and “Is This The End,” which is another contribution from Creed are just “ok.” The fact is, nearly every band who contributed a song to this album could’ve done much better. It’s a shame, really, because with the right material, this one could have been a bona fide classic. As it stands, it will probably go down as one of the most disappointing albums of its kind this year. However, as is the case with most similar soundtracks, a few strong tracks prevent Scream 3... from being completely worthless. Sevendust, Slipknot, and one of 1999’s best new bands, Staind, turn in very fine performances. But, with Sevendust being the most notable exception, even most of the better songs can be found on that particular band’s last album. The bottom line here is that nothing on this album justifies spending $15 of your hard eamed or easily eamed money. Unless you are a hardcore fan of Sevendust, or any other band who contributed a track to this album, this is one to stay away from. After a very tedious, frustrating listen, I was forced to give it a very low “C.” The few strong tracks don’t save the album as a whole, but they do prevent an even lower grade. Overall rating C: Not essential for your music collection TUB TOP 15 CD's OY THE 1990'S 1: NIRVANA: NEVERMIND 2: METALLICA: METALLICA (THE “BLACK” ALBUM) 3: PEARL JAM: TEN 4: GARTH BROOKS: NO FENCES 5: SNOOP DOGGY DOGG: DOGGYSTYLE 6: GREEN DAY: DOOKIE 7: LIMP BIZKIT: SIGNIFICANT OTHER 8: BUSH: SIXTEEN STONE 9: SHANIA TWAIN:THE WOMAN IN ME 10: SMASHING PUMPKINS: MELLON COLLIE & THE INFINITE SADNESS 11: RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS: CALIFORNICATION 12: CREED: MY OWN PRISON 13: THIRD EYE BLIND: THIRD EYE BLIND 14: STONE TEMPLE PILOTS: CORE 15: FIREHOUSE: FIREHOUSE COUGAR CRY'S TOP 12 CD's OF THE MONTH: 1: 3 DOORS DOWN: THE BETTER LIFE 2: VARIOUS ARTISTS: 2000 GRAMMY NOMINEES: RAP 3: SMASHING PUMPKINS: MACHINA: THE MACHINES OF GOD 4: CELINE DION: ALL THE WAY: A DECADE OF SONG 5: AC/DC: STIFF UPPER LIP 6: COUNTING CROWS: THIS DESERT LIFE 7: EIFFEL 65: EUROPOP 8: REBA MCENTIRE: SO GOOD TOGETHER 9: MOTLEY CRUE: LIVE: ENTERTAINMENT OR DEATH 10: VARIOUS ARTISTS: 2000 GRAMMY NOMINEES: POP 11: THIRD EYE BLIND: BLUE 12: FAITH HILL: BREATHE
