EXERCISE YOUR
MINP
By: Cinnamon Martin
Dr. Charla Rae Armitage visited WCC on
February 16 with some interesting exercises
for the brain, which have been proven to
increase academic performance. Collec
tively known as Brain Gym, these move
ments stimulate our brains. Brain Gym
grew out of clinical studies started in 1969
by Paul E. Dennison, Ph.D., an educational
therapist. His research led him to the study
of kinesiology, the science of body move
ment and the relationship of muscles and posture to brain
function. Babies and young children naturally perform what
are known as developmental movements. Dr. Dennison dis
covered how to adapt these movements and use them with
adults.
Dr. Armitage, a certified Brain Gym con
sultant who has taught at Lees-McRae as
well as Caldwell Community College, led
the group of WCC students and instructors
through an exercise called PACE that is
designed to increase blood flow to the
brain, thereby increasing brain activity.
Our group moved and flexed our way
through the activities, experiencing the
concept for ourselves. Dr. Armitage stressed that the seden
tary lifestyle of many Americans has affected us both physi
cally and mentally, contributing to problems with memory
and other cognitive abilities. She also pointed out the impor
tance of attitude toward the activities as a measure of how
successful the technique will be. One thing learned by the
entire group was the importance of WATER in our lives.
Water increases the electrical potential and oxygen in the
brain. For those who want it in plain English—it helps you
think!
Chris Sowers hosted more sessions of Brain Gym led by Dr.
Armitage in his anatomy and physiology labs. Approxi
mately 50 students benefited from these sessions.
So drink a glass or two of water and look up Brain Gym at

Answering your most
personal questions!
Dear Twiggy,
What have you done to get in shape for the summer
bathing suit season?
Fit and Firm
Well honey, I always keep myself in
perfect shape but I know that when it
comes time to be in shape for bathing
suits I have to be fit and trim to get in
my little string bikinis. Well I’m not supposed to like talk
about the “exercise” that 1 normally do to stay in shape, but
I’ll tell you some secrets anyway. Always drink lots and lots
of like water, some of my exercises are quite strenuous. And
take a little bit of olive oil and like rub it all over your body
then have someone special wrap you up in plastic wrap and sit
in a steam bath for like 30 minutes. This is a whole lot of fun
and it reduces bloating and water retention.
Dear Twiggy,
I am absolutely in love with that Mr. Cougar, Matt
Collins. He is sooo hot, and I want to try to make him mine!!
Head over Heels
I know Mr. Cougar is a very attractive young man and I’m
sure that he would be flattered by your interest but
LISTEN HERE CHICK, THAT MAN IS MINE AND IF I SO
MUCH AS SEE YOU LOOKING AT HIM, I WILL THROW
YOU DOWN AND BEAT THE LIVING FIRE OUT OF
YOU!! YOU CATCH ME BABE!!!!!
Dear Twiggy,
1 have a little problem, I can’t stop these dark hairs
from growing all over my body. I know that you had some
problems with that in the past. What can you suggest to make
them go away?
Hairy and Scary
Well dear, like first of all, 1 never had a problem with that.
But, the first thing I would ,suggcstis to try using a razor,
(duh!!) If you have already tried this you might try using some
crea^ or rubs. I love a good rub myself. I use an imported
cream from Russia called Tavarish no Losh, It works won
ders. Just get a REALLY close friend to don rubber gloves
and an oxygen mask to apply it to you. It might like sting for
the first 2 years or so, but it gets rid of all those nasty little
hairs'^C^e word of warning though, try not to get it near your
underarms or any household pets, the results would be like
really bad!!
