How does it feel to be counted in the top 10% of community
college students world wide? Just ask any one of the thirty-
three new members of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter here at
Wilkes Community College. On Thursday, March 9th, 2000,
the Alpha Kappa Omega chapter welcomed aboard the hardest-
working students on campus. The Induction Ceremony served
to applaud these students for their academic achievements and
to initiate them with the mission of the Honor Society.
Blair Hancock opened the ceremony with a welcome to
the new members and their families and an introduction of the
Chapter Officers. Though the rehearsal had been light-hearted,

more than $28 million in transfer scholarships, $60,000 in
Guistwhite Scholarships, and $50,000 in stipends awarded by
the All-USA Academic Team program. After the inductees ac
cepted membership by oath, Mrs. Hancock announced the name
of each new member. The Chapter President then bestowed
congratulations and certificates.

sor. This left Executive Officers Laura Generous, Jada Parsons,
Devin Staley, and P.R. Chairperson Brandie Huffman with most
of the remaining details of the ceremony.
All went well, however, with several volunteers com
ing to the aid of their fellow classmates. Michael Thornton pro
vided the music and served as an usher with Richard Brown. At
the ceremony’s end, old and new members mingled and enjoyed
a covered-dish supper in the Thompson Hall lobby, graciously
