crayons are left for all to enjoy. You can imagine the da
Vinci wannabes that appear every night and day (lunch
is just as special). Many hangman and tic tac toe
games have been seen, as well.
There’s lots of “specials” being thrown around here,
which probably means high prices, right? Wrong! The
prices are very reasonable. The ambiance is special, as
well. The word authentic could be used here, as well.
The brick ovens give the place a warm glowing feeling
and the lights are down a little, which make it cozier for
ail. Upon entering the bathroom, you find yourself learn
ing some Italian phrases to be used in business and/or
travel. It’s piped in. It seems there’s never a moment
when you won’t be enlightened and satiated at Macaroni
Grill.
Coming Soon: McAlister’s Deli!
By: Lacie Lyon
McAlister’s deli-style restaurant is planning to open in
mid-March on Highway 421 at the old Shoney’s location,
which, for any of you who are not sure where that is, it is
right across from the KFC, directly in front of the
Addison Inn. McAlister’s has approximately ninety res
taurants in the southeastern United States, five in the
Charlotte area.
The interior theme of the deli will consist of marble top
tables, black and white checkerboard tile floors, chalk
board menus, and many framed photos of the area, es
pecially of the WCC campus. The seating inside the es
tablishment will hold around 160 people. Upon arrival at
the deli, a customer places an order from the menu,
pays, takes a number, and then takes a seat. After
which, everything becomes full service. This is consid
ered a fast, but casual atmosphere.
McAlister's plains to offer around seventy items on the
menu, which includes three soups a day, a giant baked
potato prepared twelve different ways, appetizer plates,
over two dozen hot and cold sandwiches, a variety of
garden fresh salads, thirty-two ounce drinks with free
refills, and over six different desserts, including cookies
baked fresh daily.
Students and faculty are encouraged to try this new
change of pace. Think about it: good food without the
deep fat friers. Feels healthier already.

Anne Frank Exhibit
By Shannon Reynolds
This past Fall Semester a group of sociology students
went to Asheville, North Carolina, to attend an exhibit on
Anne Frank. The trip was used to learn about the anti-
Semitism in Germany around the time of World War II.
The exhibit itself contained many historical photographs
about the secret annex, where Anne Frank and her fam
ily had to live for two years. This exhibit was so powerful,
in fact, that you could see what was going on in the
world, and at the same time, right next to those pictures,
one could see why someone would sacrifice everything
to hide and stay alive. You could see how the Frank
family had to adjust to such harsh conditions in their own
country. This exhibit should help us be a little bit more
understanding and to know that something like this
should never be tolerated again.
The students also watched a video about a woman from
Asheville; she had her best moments of her childhood
taken away. She was a Jewish German and her best
friend Lattie was German. She could not attend her best
friend's birthday parties nor could she be seen in public
with her. When World War II was over, she never saw
her friend again.
The best part of the trip had to have been when the stu
dents met a man named Fritz Rosenthal. He was a Jew
ish German man that in 1938 escaped from Germany to
to America. He told how during the years leading to
World War II, his family was being treated worse and
worse. He told how one of his old family friends in the
United States had to sign an affidavit, saying that they
would get jobs and not be a burden to the U.S. When he
later became an American citizen, he joined the infantry.
Despite having a slight case of polio, he still wanted to
pay back the ones who oppressed him. He was a man
who was truly grateful for being in this country.
This trip was well enjoyed by the students, and hopefully
this taught everyone something about how people can
overcome such treacherous obstacles to achieve a bet
ter place in life.
