Myrtle over break. I asked her why she wanted to get
married in a city known mostly as a fun resort.
“It’s a fun place to go. I like to watch the teen
agers. Sometimes they get bored and go streaking,
kissing, and (having at least some morals, I refuse to
report the rest of what April said, there may be little chil
dren reading this). A lot of times they take off their
clothes.”
Yep, I’d get married if I could watch teens go
streaking at the same time too...
So what if you didn’t go anywhere? Most people
hung around this year, working or partying. Scott Cur-
now, well, when not in Lamaze or breast class, was re
modeling his home. Another had an unfortunate occur
rence involving a bush, a frying pan, and Captain
Morgan’s. Mrs. Smithey said that she was going to get a
pampering by spending the day at a spa in Blowing
Rock. Scott Johnson had to work. Myself, I balanced
my time in between working, writing some stories, going
to Boone, and seeing New York. Thank the gods for
that ACA time management class.
2002 Movies
By: Kyle Godwin
Movies have always been a part our society and
the creativity in movies has influenced our everyday life.
They help us see life from a fictional point-of-view,
thereby creating the “what if’ question. They have al
ways helped us to laugh, think, and always keep us on
the edge of our seats with anticipation. Whether it is the
action or choreography of The Matrix, the humor of
Rush Hour, or the drama of Titanic, we are always
shown something new on the big screen.
However, one thing that can ruin some enjoy
ment of the plot in the movie is an upcoming sequel. In
terms of action movies, sequels usually contain a lot
more fight scenes or a comedy or drama might try to get
even more in depth of the story/plot line. This is all cool
except for the fact that sequels are rarely at the level of
the original plot. They mess up the story from the first
movie and may forget a few key points, so it may not
make much sense if it throws in a few more things that
completely offsets the original plot.
I can see the irony of it being 2002 and all these
sequel movies are coming out. First off Blade 2 Blood-
lust is a good example of an action sequel that will con
tain more fight scenes. Then, of course, there is Star
Wars. Episode II. When making the first episode, they
made mistakes which throw off the plot of the original
trilogy. Next, there’s Men in Black 2. where K is sup
pose to come back into the story. Austin Powers 3
brings back the satirical sexual humor without an honest
plot. The Santa Clause 2 brings back the 1994 Tim Al
len classic. Finally, in record time, Scary Movie 3. which
makes fun of the latest horror flicks, is to be made.
I would prefer that if any company plans on
making a sequel to an in progress movie, that they use
foreshadowing to hint of an upcoming sequel, so it won’t
catch us totally by surprise. So as the year continues
on, let’s all just sit back and watch all the new movies be
advertised and catch our attention so that we can con
tinue one of America’s favorite passtimes and hobbies.
And somebody pass me the popcorn.
Jeepers Creepers
By; Kyle Godwin
Jeepers Creepers is a horror movie that relies mostly on
individual points-of-view as to whether it’s a good movie
or not. It does, however, have the creepy suspense that
absorbs one into the movie. This movie sets the events
in what most likely we’d do if we were in those similar
situations or maybe the opposite. It starts out with an
argumentative brother and sister heading home for
spring break from college. They start being chased by
an old military truck and eventually discover the truth
about what this man is and does. Also, since this half
creature man now knows that the two are involved, he
begins to terrorize them. Eventually, a crazy old wan
nabe psychic tries to help them, but it may not be
enough. This movie is very detailed and slow-paced to
where it seems like it’s just getting into the climax of the
movie and then it suddenly ends. The major disappoint
ment is that it doesn’t have much of an ending. Or
maybe to another’s point-of-view, it has the same horror
plot construction as the first Blair Witch. In either case,
it is still a good movie to see if you like the anxiety and
suspense of a horror film. However, as said, many
points-of-view will judge this movie differently.
The Others
By: Kyle Godwin
The Others is a horror/thriller film that uses the jump-
out-of-your-seat reaction. It takes place at the closing
point of World War II. Grace, a young mother who takes
care of her sunlight sensitive son and daughter, hires an
old maid, a gardener, and a mute to help out with the
neglected housework. The appearance of the house
really sets the mood and tone of the whole movie. As
time passes, unusual things and sounds start occurring.
Grace then snaps to the point of believing that someone
is hiding throughout the house and refuses to believe
her daughter’s idea about a famiiy-of ghosts. But while
the old maid tries to calm her down, the estranged hus
band returns from the war before leaving again sud
denly. Grace is constantly being played with by this
“other being” but eventually begins to understand. The
end of the movie reveals the truth about the three new
house helpers, the house, and the mother and children
themselves. The ending should not be given away, but
it is definitely one that is completely unexpected. This is
a good movie for anyone who enjoys being scared. It
doesn’t require a lot of thinking, but it does help to keep
up with the movie.
