Cougar Cry Page 20 Epte-ptofpTOePt Cept... Cirque du Soleii By: Mark Shumate On approach to the Charlotte motor speedway Sunday April 14, 2002 the dominate feature was not the massive speedway itself but a bright blue and yellow swirled big top. This swirl of color belongs to Cirque du Soleil and the show to be presented within Quidam, one of five shows touring at present. This is no ordinary circus of lion tamers and shady characters, but a well choreo graphed piece of performance art combining a worldly collection of dancers, singers, actors, along with a tal ented collection of acrobats displaying their talents to live music of various styles. The set-up inside the tent which holds 2,500 people left no one out of the show with all seats being within excellent viewing distance from the stage, so whether purchasing a cheap seat or a vip pass no part of the performance will be missed. Cur rently two shows per day are offered, each running one hour of performance with a twenty-five minute intermis sion followed by a second hour of performance. If some thing different is craved any of the touring shows by Cir que du Soleil will leave you amazed as well as firing your emotions and fueling the imagination. If unable to catch a touring show two in-residence shows are offered in Las Vegas and one in Walt Disney World in Florida. Show locations, times, and ticket availability are offered on their website {http://www.cirquedusoleil.com) this site also offers a history of Cirque du Soleil along with pic tures and descriptions of the various shows offered. “Quidam: a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure linger ing on a street corner, a person rushing past. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming, going, living in our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the silent majority. One who cries out, sings and dreams within us all. This is the Quidam that Cirque du Soleil is celebrating. The characters: a young girl fumes, she has already seen everything there is to see, and her world has lost all meaning. Her anger shatters her little world, and she find herself in the universe of Quidam. She is joined by a joyful companion as well as another character, more mysterious, who will attempt to seduce her with the mar velous, the unsettling, and the terrifying. The story that unfolds during the show explores the dra matic new world a young girl is introduced to by a face less stranger. The story unfolds as the young girl comes out of her state of depression with a renewed love of life sparked by new wonders of Quidam.
