Memories of James Larkin Pearson By: Deborah Dancy (James Larkin Pearson has been noted several times in past editions of the Cougar Cry but it came to light recently that we have, on campus, his great granddaughter Christine Walker. We asked Christine and her mother Cathy Anderson, the surviving direct descendants of Mr. Pearson, if we could interview them. We asked that they share their memories) Cathy Anderson: Granddaughter of Mr. Pearson “ I never thought of him as being famous; to me, he was just “Grand-Daddy.” He seemed to never change over the years, nor did he appear to grow old. He was always the same sweet, gentle person. I remember when Granddaddy lived in Greensboro and we'd go to visit; my brother Kenneth and I would always go into his printing shop to play. Playing in his printing shop was a favorite thing for us to do. It’s a wonder that we didn’t get seriously hurt or cut our fingers off. The shop still contained the old press and paper cutters which were very dangerous. After moving back to Wilkes County, Granddaddy set up his print shop behind his daugh ter Agnes’ (my mother) home. His printing press was no longer running at the time, even though my dad had tried to make belts for it. The belts looked like those used on the saws in the saw mills of the time. The printing press never operated again, but Granddaddy just liked having it in his shop outback. He would spend all day in the shop and come into the home to eat and sleep. He once took a banana to the printing shop in case he got hungry and wanted a snack, but he didn’t eat it so he carried it back into the house in the evening. This routine continued for days until finally the poor banana was so worn out (not to mention black and rotten) that he finally threw it away. It was just so funny to see him carrying that banana back and forth. That was just (Continued on page 17)
