The Student Government Association is having a very busy semester. They are currently sponsoring the Angel Tree program for the campus. This activity is coordinated through the Christmas in Wilkes program. The SGA will also be hosting a Holiday Re ception on December 9 in the Student Center Commons. It will begin at 11 a.m. and is be ing catered by the culinary students and the cafe staff. Everyone needs to make time to enjoy the great food and desserts that will be served. In addition to this reception, a Holi day Craft Workshop is being offered to stu dents and WCC employees on December 8. The workshop is being conducted by WCC’s Angela Bond and is being held at 11 a.m. and at 12 noon in room 1112. There is no cost for attending the workshop, but space is limited. The final event that will be provided this se mester by the SGA is free exam snacks. These snacks will be available in the Student Center lobby on December 12,15, and 16. Three SGA officers attended the Fall N4CSGA Conference on October 17-19 in Greenville, NC. Those attending were Nancy Wolfe, programming chairperson; Karen Perry, assistant programming chairperson: Amanda Canter, vice president; and Scott Johnson, advisor. The group had the oppor tunity to attend several workshops and review some possible entertainment that could be brought to the WCC campus. Members of the SGA will be traveling again in March to the spring conference that will be held in Ra leigh. Applications will be available in Janu ary for those students who are interested in applying to attend this conference. The Student Government Association is responsible for many exciting events that happen on campus. This semester the group has sponsored such things as the Welcome Back Lunch, free caricatures, WCC Idol Con test, NASCAR simulator, Voter Registration Drive, trip to the NC Shakespeare Festival, Evening Student Appreciation Social, free Old Tyme Photos program, Alcohol Awareness Week and a Fall Festival. Any student that would like to help with planning these types of activities and be a part of a "great organiza tion" should attend an SGA meeting to get more information or contact Scott Johnson in the Student Services Office. The student ac tivity fees are used to pay for these events and by participating in the SGA, students have a voice in determining what events are planned for the campus. SGA meetings are held every other Thursday in Room 1112 of the Stu dent Center at 12:15 p.m. The SGA provides many leadership op portunities and it is a great way for students to get involved with WCC. The things they learn from their experiences with SGA can also enhance the skills that they have to offer to future employers. By planning activities, leading meetings and attending conferences, students are strength ening their organization, communication and team building skills. These are traits that are heavily desired by employers and a student that seeks out leadership opportunities is making a valuable investment towards his or her future career oppor tunities ALCOHOL AWARENESS WEEK r ' i B YOB (Bring Your Own Banana)
